Good track isn't it. It's from Putamayo African Acoustic. There's a few good tracks on there.

Interesting story for bed time. So Ry Cooder had set up studio time in Cuba (think in the 90’s). The plan was to bring a whole load of African/ Malian musicians over to play with Cuban musicians along with Ry Cooder. The Africans couldn’t get visas. So there was Ry with Cuban studio and musicians booked and had to come up with something. So someone had the bright idea of finding loads of older Cuba artists, and record them. This became Buena Vista Social Club. Basically revived Ru Cooders career and not to mention a wealth of other Cuban projects. Time passed and the original African collaboration was revisited. The result was Afrocubism. A terrific album. Fusion of Latin Cuban and African Malian music. Djelimady Tounkara was one of the musicians on Afrocubism.

Nice story but i do not think Ry Cooder has ever had that much of a following to need his career reviving . He also when the record was released had his US passport taken and he was forbidden from any travel meaning hw would not be able to tour and earn money for live dates during this time . So glad that this turned out the way it did as so many fading Cuban stars of huge ability finally agot a little time in the sun .

Quality of musicianship was outstanding. Not just a couple of them but the whole band. Great memories

Hi Pete I saw the full Buena Vista Tour the first time round when they were all alive then the second were a few had died but still excellent . My Son bought me tickets to the final tour when only one of the originals was still performing and while nice it was very sad as it was so obvious that the originals had been real super stars and sadly those following are just not as good . I consider myself very lucky to have seen this group when I did . Before that album came along I had seen Sierra Maestre loads of times and had lots of their albums which if you have not heard would certainly say go buy some .

It was one of those opportunities that cannot be missed. When you are there and you know you are in the presence of something special. It was not just about the music but the whole occasion. I’ll take a look at those Sierra Maestre albums. Thanks for the recommendation.
