Picture first:
What do we have here then? What is the word to describe more than one pair of speakers hanging out together (a "Noise of speakers" or a "Flap of speakers"), who knows
Anywho, yesterday (4th of Feb) I paid a visit to Jason's house to listen to the Ekta's and Vaders and also to compare them to my Reiver Jenna's to see what was what but using familiar recordings to me through his system (which has changed since my last visit)!!
I am not one for going on and on with a detailed and prolific write up as to every nuance noticed but I will give my thoughts on the day.
Started with my speakers and played some of vinyl of mine and Jason's so we both had an impression of what the Jenna's were doing - I reminded him that the first iteration of the Jenna's were made for an opera singer and that the pair I had had been tweaked further (only 2 exist of this model).
We both commented that they seemed 'forward' in there presentation which would, in a way, make sense if they had been made for a singer and we decided, before I left that we would carry out some measuring of the speakers to see if this was indeed the case.
The Ekta's came next and what a change they made - not as forward and the bass extension was really noticeable (the bass of the Jenna's was impressive for the the size of the cones and seemed very taught but the extension was missing compared to the Ekta's)
We were using the BB3 through the Avalon and the MF power amp (the Avalon was a really nice thing to look at, looking very industrial in a restrained way......) and the combination with his Rega, arm and cart proved to be very good.
I asked Jason if we could hear the phono stage in the Avalon - wow, noise floor dropped and the SQ definitely lifted
Well done Oli on a great looking and sounding pre/phono stage!
OK, so we then moved on to the Vaders.
Ekta's and Jenna's moved out of the way, wired up and the first record played (we used a David Sylvian LP that we hade tried on the 2 other speakers as it had a nice range of instruments and levels so would be a good way to see how the speakers altered what we heard.
Yep, another level has been achieved in the enjoyment of listening to music. The bass notes so much clearer and defined, the midrange made it easier to pick out instruments and locate and the treble was controlled and very enjoyable. Not only do these speakers look awesome (the finish Jason has achieved on this pair were to die for) but one of the better speakers I have heard - period.
Now that I have moved into the bigger room and had the funds these would be on my list to purchase (no spare funds at the moment so will have to wait...) as the lower frequencies can be tuned to match the room nodes helping to create the correct SQ these would be an awesome addition (would soon require me to invest in the next step up in amplification etc so the cost of purchasing the speakers would then increase several fold )
Many thanks Jason for your hospitality - if any of you would like to hear Jason's range of speakers then I urge you to do so ASAP as you will not be disappointed. (and the Avalon ain't to bad either!!)
