I have a few systems and they are all changed in some way by reclockers DDC or similar. Now recently i changed my main music system player from a Raspberry Pi 4 / Musical Fidelity VLink 192 to an Allo Digione Signature this feeds a Mutec 3+ . All well and good this gave me the best sound i have had form this system so far since I first installed it .
Now the Allo Digione was taken out of my active three way system and I used the GD Audio unit Lurch sold me being fed UCB from Raspberry Pi4 . This sounded fine but I then looked at the Musical Fidelity unit and thought well what happens if i send the USB signal from the Pi to the MF then take the Spdif from the MF in to the GD Audio unit ? I have read about people daisy chaining Mutec 3+ and saying that this gets improvements in sound quality over a single Mutec unit . Sadly do not have anyone i can borrow a second Mutec from and certainly do not have the money to buy a second just to give it a try . But I can try the chain thingy with the two units I have .
So and additional digital SPDIF lead was found and the connection was made Raspberry Pi - Moode Audio Distro - USB out to Musical Fidelity Vlink - RCA Spdif out from MF and in to GD Audio unit . GD Audio Unit SPDIF on RCA out then through the rest of the system . I listened to the system with just the GD Audio unit getting a straight USB feed from the Raspberry Pi and made sure i played 5/6 tracks and noted them down in order . Then added the MF in the chain and played the same tracks again . Did not expect too much of a difference and though there was a difference it was subtle and not instantly obvious . However there was a more relaxed nature to the sound which I am finding very attractive and will be staying with the MF in place now and will live with this for a few days then switch back and see if there is any drop of change .

Sorry never read TAS so the blame lies with Misterc when I was at the Addicts bake off he was the one who mentioned daisy chaining Mutecs then found other posters in various sites saying the same thing . As noted do not have the money or equipment to try out with Mutec,s so have this a go .
While I may be thought to be mad and I can see that view until you try it for yourself you are not able to confirm or deny what I say . Sensible people will say can not be bothered but sadly I have never been sensible .What I have done is do the test and tell others about it . What I have not done is say it is universal or that anyone else will find the thing to be true .
Just thought to add this some people swear by cable supports and many agree they do something . I made a set and have them a try . Have it a month of inserting them and taking them out . My view they make zero difference to me and would not bother . However others think they are important and we are both right . If it works for you then it works , if it does not then just move on but do not think that those who believe it works are wrong they are not . They just listen and hear differently to me which is right and as it should be , we are all different .

It's normal to hear a difference when you swap something round, even if in reality there is no difference. It's a basic function of perception, like seeing recognisable shapes in clouds. It just doesn't happen every time for everyone.
Not saying that you have not made a real difference with this swap, it's a complex set up you have, there could be factors at play that have not been considered.

Thanks macca as I am the one listening to the music and find the change both an improvement even if only slightly and reversible then will stick with it . Really could not agree more about it might be something else in my system that this is showing the change . This is why it is for me at least so hard to know and be sure what is happening . So all you can do is say in my system with my ears and my music this is what I hear . After that it is just interesting to heart others reaction both positive and negative .

These days I cannot be arsed with it, as long as I'm not hearing anything that is annoying or irritating me I'm happy. I could go batter with better room or speakers but not really got any compulsion to do that. Long since got past using music to listen to equipment (although it's still fun on rare brief occasion).

So as normal never leave things alone when they are working well . I know it is madness but it has been going on so long now I doubt I could stop . After reading John,s recent journey with his system and the Supra Excalibur cable being so much better than some of the others he tried I kept a look out for a used one . Found a few days ago and it arrived to day . So in it went between the Musical Fidelity Vlink and the Raspberry Pi 4 with moodeaudio distro . Yes I know USB is not the best but in may case that particular connection is twice removed from the digital signal going in to my system with both the MF and GD Audio doing work on the signal .
Now given that the two above units are changing so much changing the USB cable form a Supra Standard to the Excalibur Silver Version should not really make much difference , should it ? Well yet another of those things that should do nothing has kicked me in the pants . In this system and with my music and my ears the Excalibur is very much a more musical cable than the standard . The standard is very good on its own and can be had for around £20-25 used on flea bay so at that price try it I doubt you will go back to standard USB and you have spent very little . The Excalibur comes up less often and is £100 new so this is a little more serious but in my view money well spent . I would agree with other views here that if possible USB is not the best digital connection and should be avoided if possible . If not then some form of converter between your player and the DAC is a good thing . I have only had about an hour up to now with the Excalibur and I will come back after a few days and a couple of swaps to confirm what I hear right now . I have no idea if USB cables burn in and sound better after a few hours (10 , 20 , 100 ?) use but if things only get better then I am a very happy bunny . Thanks John yet another thing to try and cost me money , but i do agree with you it is worth it .

Sounds like you're on a roll bencatKeep it up, always interesting hearing about what others are trying out (and good to hear it's on the advice of other forum members rather than internet hearsay or biased reviews) that's a major contributing factor towards this place being what it is!

I've had a recent mess about with digital signals. There has always been a niggle that the USB link from the Innuos Zen was in some way restricting the best performance, so when a relatively inexpensive (£125) SOtM DDC (digital to digital converter) came up I jumped at it.
The signal from the Innuos is now available as AES, coax or optical. Whether it is the conversion or the fact that the signal is now galvanically isolated having cleaned thing up I don't know, but it has removed a digital 'thickening' to the sound.
Very happy with the result.

Right Alan has just informed that he has made the alterations on the Mutec and will be sending it back soon so should have it back in place next week . Will try and keep myself patient and not get too ahead of myself . Will get it back in place and just to be sensible will put it back in and leave it on play at low level for a couple of hours before I sit down and listen . I know the Mutec has been used by me and should be well broken in but no harm done by giving it the best chance to shine . Once I have got things up and playing again will get back to those reading this and give my reactions .
As for you John keep your bloody ideas to yourself I need to have a quiet period of just loving what i am hearing and keeping my mind off yet another change and spending more money .

Right the Mutec arrived back today and it was supposed to be a 2.5 plug but it was not instead it was a 2.2 ah well not to worry as with all of us I think I have little box of things and out comes a 2.2 to 2.5 converter and off we go . First great thing is that it powers up and all the lights start there traffic light set up. At this point I went in the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea and some toast giving the tea plenty of time to brew and get the full taste . Peanut butter on the toast tea poured and could hear music playing as I went in .
So sat down and listened okay everything was as it should be no hums , pops or distortion in fact very much the opposite every thing on this track was really clean as it should be on an electronic music track . Set up a few of my go to tracks for seeing how things sound (go on admit it you all have them ) . Now I have to preface this with what I said earlier I currently do not have an original Mutec in place to try alongside mine with LPSU so I am working with audio memory which is not great for anyone . So run through the six tracks I had picked out and all of them sounded incredible but they had sounded very good before was this better ? Honest answer is yes I think it is better and mostly in the completely silent back ground the music is coming out of which makes the contrast of on and off that much more .
But I could also just be fooling myself which in the long run does not matter but it will be nice to get things in place with Steve for a back to back listen . I know did something I would recommend to anyone else as a test . I switched on Radio 6 music because this is not a full flac service and if the sound can be improved on this then you know things are working correctly . First was Mary Ann Hobbs not someone I would ever listen to normally as am not really liking many of the tracks and hate the drivel the lady comes out with . Then on to Craig Charles now I do like him and lots of the music he plays and bingo from the Stevie Wonder Superstition comes on and that bounce to the key boards is there then Stevie sings and it is just heaven . I am sure this never sounded that good before as I would (except for Cerys on Sunday) listen to couple of tracks then get bored with the way the music sounded and switch back to my music . Been listening now for about thirty minutes and yes this is much better than before I could listen now to whole show and not be distracted by the quality of the stream .
So thank you Alan a great job done and I have become even more convinced that LPSU is the best way to currently power items at this moment .

Sorry I got the plug size wrong, not sure if I have even got any 2.1 sockets.
The smaller size is a 2.1mm pin, not 2.2.
Glad it's doing the business.

Great, stuff Andrew, and I'm sure it will sound even better once my SBooster ECO & Ultra mk2 arrive at yours. I must admit when I bought the Ultra I wasn't expecting much for my £90 (hence why I bought online so could return it) but it made quite a difference to the Node2. Don't know how or why, but it did so I kept it.

Nothing like a back to back comparison though. So I’m off on Sunday for a bit of winter sun, back on 6th. The hopefully Jason will be dropping of my Ektas later that week. We can sort trips out either way Liverpool and/or Nantwich after the 6th. Could be interesting!

Okay today the SBooster from John arrived and has replaced the DIY LPSU Alan settled for me a while back .
As always it is very hard to compare two sounds when there is a big gap between them so not claiming too much . Firstly what it has made clear is that even using the lowly DIY supply it was doing a decent job when Mutec is a very different sounding beast from the SMPS version . Treble in particular has more real clarity now and is more detailed .
SBooster time and first hurdle over when connected up and fitted it worked and powered up . Next hurdle music started playing which is always a relief . Was it better ? Well currently I am using the straight unit and not mk2 booster and after around two or so hours yes it most certainly is better and it seems to have added extra drive to music making things with a best motor along . I love active systems for their speed , it is hard to describe to others but noted start and decay or stop much faster with no sense of smearing of overhang . It is like some one has tidied up the room everything sounds neater and for me better . Passive speakers I have heard to date just never seen to have this control . Quads on the other hand do have this as part of what they do well they do not have overhang or added decay voices sound like real voices . The Mutec using the SBooster adds this even more and everything seems in time a pushing along more than when the Mutec is not there . So far I am happy and will leave things as they are until Saturday when my Wife goes to work for the day and over night and then will add in the mk2 booster and we what that brings .
David Bowie is just singing Quick Sand and sounds wonderful really emotive and powerful this is my favourite Bowie album by some way and sounds better on this system than I have ever heard . I have also done the Fever test and yes they do sound like drums . I am a very happy boy .

Nice one, glad the SBooster is having a positive effect, don't forget to switch it up to 6v when you add the Ultra mk2. Not sure what you'll perceive when you add the Ultra at the weekend, but for me when I added it in circuit with the pimped Node it just made the sound more right.

Okay now the next step forgot that John had sent a Mk2 booster doodah to put in . Was supposed to do a test on Saturday but was just enjoying the music so left things as they were (okay I admit it I am a lazy sod and it sounded great) . So today while messing about with stuff found the Ultra thingy and thought best give it a try .
Current wisdom is that adding extra connections in a system is a bad thing but not in this case . I remembered to change the voltage to 6v before switching on and replayed the song I had just listened to . Now I am not sure what is going on here but it has changed the sound not a huge jump and the effect is quite difficult to describe . Relaxed is the best I can come up with everything just sounds less rushed and more in place . The sound stage has expanded and seems to more space either side and depth wise . What ever it is I am now going to have to buy this along with the SBooster so John will laughing at me . Thing is though with these uplift once you have heard them you just can not unhear them and you do not willingly want to go back . This could end up a very expensive year for me .

Just to keep things up to date I visited Steve yesterday and too my Mutec around to his with the Sbooster LPSU to try and do a back to back comparison . Sadly while we could get my Mutec to show it was getting an audio signal and the DAC was receiving that signal we could not get any music out with my Mutec connected. This it would seem was down to Roon and the setting up in that which as I have never used it I was just not able to help Steve with .
Then again it was a lovely day listening to lots of different music and getting the chance to hear Steve,s Arke speakers which was something I had wanted to do after reading so much on here . They are very good speakers and sounded very good in parts . As they are just breaking in and Steve needs to do some fine tuning with placement etc I perhaps have not heard them at their best but I am sure they be singing in no time after a bit of fettling .
All is not lost though as Steve will be doing the reverse visit to my house and mine is a much simpler chain so much easier to switch between the two Mutecs . Not sure how Steve will feel about my Quad ESL 57 as they are a very different listen than the Arkes the only real cross over being bot speakers do excellent vocals . Ah well we all create our systems for our own use and when Steve comes over I will have my NVA Amplifier upgraded to the latest S300 specification and hopefully singing as it was in S150 spec before it went off a bit . Will report back after that on the views over standard to LPSU powered Mutec .

I have to say I agree with you regarding the sound on the Ektas at Steve's. I've mentioned before (in other posts) that the Ektas are not easy speakers to please/drive with amplifiers. I have tried many amps and they didn't seem to respond well to class D. I'm sure this isn't case for all class D, but they certainly weren't firing on all cylinders with the Nords at Steve's. In some respects the sound was great - good clarity in vocals. However, the bass was not what I'm used to (apparently this has improved) and there seems to be some congestion in the sound and limited depth to the soundstage. Steve and I have discussed all this at length and he is going to try a 686 - I know the Ektas sing with a 686! I believe Steve will be exploring some room treatment options also. As you mentioned the speakers need a fair bit longer to run in too. I know this is a contentious view, but mine improved for many months from new.

Yes to all the above. Another little trick I’ve learnt lately…’Pump up the volume’ !! Also… The Ekta’s respond very favourably to what would seem to be innocuous adjustments. One trick I missed was that I should have left the system playing on Roon radio whilst we were away for a week. Would have dramatically cut down on run in time. Having said that I really can hear them opening up as time goes on. Fuller with more depth/bass. After Andrews visit I actually lost the settings on my Mutec and took ages to get the right one for usb input etc. Having stumbled across it whilst scrolling through button pressing, I’ve taken photos to make sure I know what setting works.

Oli or even Jason if he can help on this what sort of Amplifier has the best chance of working with the Ektas ? Yes I know you use the 686 but they are very hard to get hold of and expensive . I am not the best at this so accept others know much better but as always I do have an opinion .
Listening to Steve,s Ektas it did not seem to me that the issues it was having were with the amplifiers they seem fine and as showed when they played vocals they are very transparent . As noted there were bass issues but I was of the strong belief that this was a placement issue for the speakers . I get the impression that the set up and placement is very important with the Ektas and you need to get this right and as good as it can be before you start any other changes . I said to Steve the first thing I would do is set up the listening seat and using tape mark the point then measure from there to where the front of each speaker is and make that as close as possible the same distance (the back wall on Steve,s room is not straight but I still think the speakers were not aligned and equidistant from the listening spot . Once this is done leave it sit down have an afternoon of listening and decide if it is better than the previous position . If it is then days work done and leave it till the next day . Then start doing small adjustments to toe in , distance from the back wall etc but do just one then take a good deal of time and listen .

Definitely agree that the placement needs to be optimised, although this is best done in-depth when the speakers are run in. Steve and I have also discussed some subtle room treatments. The front and rear wall reflections are not helping with the soundstage and separation of instruments. Some bass traps would help as Steve has strong room modes in the high 30Hz and mid 40Hz. I have heard the Ektas in many rooms and with many amps and I am pretty convinced they will sound quite a lot better with different power amps. The only way to know for sure is to try other amps in Steve's room. Yes, run-in, speaker placement and room treatments will help massively too. I'm sure Steve will report back on what works best.
