Been a fan of Marantz CD players for years. Had the CD 63, CD 63 KI Sig, and CD 67SE. I moved to streaming around 12 years ago and sold the CD 67SE. I'm planning to go back to using a CD player again and may go back to the CD 67SE. Good to see Marantz committing themselves to high end CD playback

When my Densen CD player swallowed my Caroline Lavelle CD then refused to play it and refused to give it back, I bought an "open box" Marantz CD6006 UK Edition for 280 quid from Richer Sounds as a stop gap. That was 3 years ago, and still haven't got round to having the Densen fixed. The Marantz is more than good enough - perhaps I could get a nice DAC and use the CD6006 as a transport.
Maybe it's time to get the Densen mended, then sell it and put the cash towards a DAC. The Marantz is definitely a keeper.

Seriously? I heard Densen are no more and parts can be a right arse to obtain. If you can do something with it I'll love you forever. Even if you only manage to rescue my Caroline Lavelle CD that'll be a win. Are you going to Cranage Alan? I am, but only on Sunday. Work commitments. Still owe you a pint btw, and Cranage sold that 'river water' beer you were so fond of

Still got my 52 MKII that I bought new in the 80s.
Doesn't get used but not worth anything so it's on the spares shelf in the computer room.

Not sure how old your densen is but they've used ide cd drives for a long time, with a little alloy extrusion glued onto the drawer front edge that makes it look fancy.

It's a Beat B-400 Plus. and was made around 2005 I would guess. There must be some love for these players, I've just seen that a non-working one fetched £200-odd on Ebay.

Probably/certainly fakes. Better to find a donor player and swap the mech. The only way to be sure.

I'm not sure about the wisdom of fitting either Ebay snide lasers or an original salvaged from a donor player, which could well be on its last legs. If genuine Sony units are available I'd prefer that, even if there was a cost difference. I'd still need to have the repair carried out by someone competent (Alan?) - I think I once saw something you (Macca) posted about the hazardous (to the player) nature of such a repair, something about static iirc.

I have fitted many lasers bought off ebay and all have worked as well as the originals, in fact I am waiting for one to arrive now for a repair.

I've also bought lasers off ebay before I realised that they were Chinese copies. Yes they work, for a while.
Regardless of how much the player or transport cost they mostly tend to use the same few Sony, Matsushita or Toshiba mechs that are in the budget players.
Sometimes there's nothing wrong with the laser, it just needs recalibrating, although that's not straightforward to do.

Densen CD players are a PIA, have looked at upgraded quite a few over the years, tempermental especially with the CD drives, Densen used to have a policy of taking any of the CD drive problems back and fixing them F.O.C. although with the lack of transports and servo drive boards availble, not sure if they still do this but worth an ask I feel.
Some of the Marantz's are quite musical and easy to work on, I am fond of the CD7 two of which I have plus one I need to fix lol

A bit off-topic, sorry. Correct - the B-400 series all used the KSS-213c laser assembly (I bought a faulty one myself recently - £80 and just needed a single ring drop of oil on the spin motor top bearing to get it working again. PFM thread with photos here (is it OK to cross post? Sorry if not). One item to note - Deneen use their own servo board under the laser, not Sony’s, so you’d need to swap that over to when replacing lasers. I’m still going to get a full replacement mech/laser for mine, as the plastic laser sled rail has a hairline crack from age in it - I only had it stop playing music once while going over it, but mechs so cheap I’d rather just replace. But if yours has the CD jammed in it, 99% the tray loading belt needs replacing (maybe caused by misaligned CD, hence no eject - normally they start to show up with needing help to open or close. Anyhow, mechanical, not laser. I’d be happy to fix it for you, but I’m in Swissieland Oh, never heard the newer Marantz’s - personally thought they lost their way when they moved to bitstream way back. Richard

For the B-400 machines they no longer repair but offer heavily discounted latest B-440 series and above.
