I think the 100 would come into its own with some sort of panel or electrostatic loudspeaker. But I'm not keen on that type of speaker. For me there are 3 tiers of amp Tier one - tat Tier two - acceptable Tier three -outstanding. Almost all amps are tier two. Tier one is rare and mostly populated by valve amplifiers and some Jap solid-state tat from the 1970s. Tier three is rare too, I've only heard a handful of amps - maybe ten - I would put in tier three. Probably works out almost 50/50 valve/solid state. All of them either expensive or DIY creations. Sell it on Macca and put the funds to a Tier three bad boy

I might, I have one in mind. I hate buying new though and I've never seen a used one come up for sale. For good reason. Like proper JBLs, no-one who gets them is interested in swapping them out, you have to wait for an owner to die and then be quick.

No not Benchmark, never heard one.
Will keep quiet about it as if one does come up I don't want even more people jumping on it lol.
Top tier get the harmonics right, that's the difference between 2 and 3. That's most obvious with things like vocal harmonies, the purity of tone is there. But once you hear it in that you hear it in all the other sounds too.
Tier 2 amps sound fine, good even, until you compare to tier 3 and then you realise tier 2 sound broken by comparison. Tier 3 aren't necessarily the last word in transparency but it helps if they are that too.
The KSA100 I would put in top tier as it gets the harmonics right. But lacks the transparency. Same with, say, the Radford STA15. The 50S has it all though.
I want it all. And I want it now.
That could be in a song.

Yeah, the KSA 100 is a fine machine. I loved it...thoroughly, but like you say, once you hear the transparency of the KSA50s, it's hard to live with anything else. Personally, i think you'd love the Neurochrome, but without putting one in your system, it's difficult to spend that sort of money and then you have to get someone to build it....but i think you could probably manage it in truth. It's very user friendly. Personally, i dont want anyone else here to buy one......we'll all have the same bloody gear and nothing to talk about

lol that might be a problem.
I don't doubt the Neurochrome for transparency but it's the harmonics thing that is the most important. I don't know if it has that until I hear it.
That's why I'm unwilling to take a punt on anything expensive without hearing it first. You can see the level of transparency in the measurements; but the harmonics thing, I don't know how to spot that in the measurements, or what measurements would show it.
Like the Linn LK100 I've got here, classic Tier 2 amp. Clear as a bell, crystal clean, but doesn't do the harmonics right. The sweetness is not there and for me, without the sweetness you don't have music, just sound. It can still be impressive and entertaining, but there's some part of the animal bit of the brain that ultimately rejects it as 'not right.'

It's fascinating how we have different criteria for assessing gear. I have to confess that I'm at a loss to appreciate "harmonics" being the arbiter of the ultimate. I'm not even sure what it means in this context. Maybe I just haven't heard any Tier 3 amps. Or didn't appreciate their special abilities when I did. Deaf as f#ck,that's me. I guess I'm just a Tier 2 kind of guy.

It's the sweetness Jerry. Some have it some just don't. It's not the only criteria but it's the one I consider essential.
I could show you with two amps, back to back and you'd say 'oh right that's what you mean.' One of those things you can't properly put it into words.

Have you ever thought of a valve amp Macca, Doge a company I had heard of, but knew nothing about, but since I started looking at You Tube have found out a little more about them. To what I can gather they were originally designed by some young Chinese engineers and cost considerably more than they do now. It would seem the Doge 10 is most unlike a valve amp and I see they do it now with 3 options of sound. Me, I'd plump for the cheaper Doge 5 which would be all the amp I would ever need now. You can see dems of the 10 and the 5 on YT, the 5 seeming to be a ridiculous bargain with the technology and ease of use you get. doge.audio/products/I should have added this may be completely off the mark for you Macca but I've posted in case any other members might be interested or who have never heard of the brand.

If I was going to go for a valve amp it would be a Radford STA15 or 25 since they are already a known quantity to me.
Have been tempted when they come up for sale, but they have always been too far away for collection to be a realistic option otherwise I might have gone for it.
As far as the Doge goes, they look good value but as always I'd want to either see a full suite of independent measurements, or try one in my own system for a week or so first.
I don't put any faith in subjective reviews. Different system, room, taste in music and expectations. You don't know if the reviewer has any real idea what quality replay sounds like. Or if they are honest. I see rave reviews of some right old tat, especially speakers.

There's plenty on YT regarding Doge, just to give you some idea of the sound, infact the owner showed a video, of him breaking the glass on 2 Psvane KT88's, the normal one and an improved model called the Ti, it has what looks like grey coloured paint on the inside of the glass, well would you believe it, they both appear to be the same valve. Strangely enough not long after seeing this video, someone was interested in the more expensive valve and I was able to post this video and let them decide for themselves. Forgot to mention, I'm sure those Radford's are excellent amplifiers and would love to hear one someday.

I don't think you can get any idea of the sound from Youtube. I know that goes against the grain these days, I don't know why though. You're listening to the sound of an amp and speakers through another set of amps and speakers. I suppose if it sounds crap you can tell that, as the second set of amps and speakers won't fix crap. But otherwise there's nothing to be learnt there.

I know it's not perfect by any means, but sometimes it is the only way to get some kind of idea, and some of the recording quality is really good nowadays.

Post by macca on Mar 8, 2021 10:21:26 GMT
yes the recording quality is often good but you're still running it through another system to hear it.
It's just nothing like enough evidence for me to take blind punts on kit costing four figures.
I've watched a couple of videos now on the Chord M Scaler - 'here it is with M-scaler switched in, here it is with M-scaler switched out'.
No difference can be heard. But people who have heard/own Mscaler say it makes an obvious difference. An obvious difference that does not show up on Youtube. Assuming it does make an obvious difference that does clearly show the limitations of auditioning anything via Youtube, does it not?
I'm trying to find a solution for the tiniest of issues in what is, on the whole, a great sounding system. That sort of subtlety just isn't going to come across via Youtube.

Can't really fault it at all. I'll swap the Soncoz back in at some point and compare again. From memory the Soncoz is maybe a little sweeter and more sonorous. But memory can be a funny thing. Especially mine.
When you think the Soncoz has a DAC chip per channel, two linear power supplies built in and is ten times the size and three and half times the price of the Topping which just runs off a mobile phone charger and yet there's practically nothing in it in terms of sound quality...
Missed that JVC amp I was watching on eBay. Bit pissed off about that especially as it only went for £15.

Or could be that there is only a sliver of difference (if that) between well-engineered DACs? I would hesitate to say they sound identical, as that's not my perception.
Better amplification might show up more differences. Plus I need to listen to more recordings first, only done about ten albums on it so far.

If you want invalid reasoning try this.
I don't know what I changed on that tidy up but I think my top end issue has gone. Definitely sounds more 'right' now. All the same components and cables as before.
Cables are dressed but they were before. I did pull out quite a few unused power cables and interconnects that were lying about out from round the back though, maybe they were acting as aerials and generating RFI around the cables in use? I don't know but I must have been getting some crud in somehow from somewhere.
I think it is better because although it's only slight it was annoying me frequently on some albums and it doesn't seem to be anymore. Have to try a couple of others that show it up just to be sure though.

Just listening to Stone Roses 'Second Coming' now. I know it's a bit of a stodgy recording but I listened to this a couple of days ago and now there is proper cymbal decay whereas last time there was just a mush. I remember actively thinking how Sh#t it sounded.

Looking at your nice tidy rack I was some what shocked, it looks great Macca If it's sorted out your slight problem, well it's a win win situation, and what did you say earlier, oh yes "Today I plan to do jack Sh#t. Going well so far." It is no surprise to me there is very little between your two dac's, I've got a D30, cost me £85, I'm sure I would have to move up to a D90 to really see and improvement, or alternatively one of these R2R dac's which I may or may not like their presentation.

I have it on 4 as one of the reviews (Paul Rigby) reckoned this was their preference, not tried the others yet.
Quite funny in that review, he complains that there is not an option to select no filter. When it's pointed out to him in the comments that there has to be a filter he tries to cover up by saying he prefers not to have a choice. Err yeah, okay mate.

Way too expensive.
Anyway, I'm happy right now. Don't know what the problem was or how it got fixed but I've got my high-end sound back.
Was listening to Oscar Peterson and some other stuff last night, just stunning. Wow moment after wow moment. NAD is staying until it dies or I find something better.
