optical You could make it more unique with a few stick on purple stars!! It certainly would Dave.... 🤣 Like some of those monstrosities you see on "record store Day". Thoughts go out to anyone whom gets lumped with them

Play something!!!!! Unfortunately, not very likely, as I've mentioned serious modification is required as the hole is for a 10" arm currently. Hopefully Angus will be able to trim the plate so it can fit the REGA arm within the current hole (towards the edge) . . . . I'd give it a go but unfortunately I don't have a workshop tacked onto my gaff or the tools/knowledge to do it. All my work has to happen around/during work hours unfortunately, annoyingly we just got quite busy . . . . Had it been a hole for a 9" arm or I had a 10" to hand, it'd be spinning as I type . . . . can't rush perfection Oli.

Don't get me wrong I'm miffed too (is that what that emoji is??!! haha) but I always suspected some hurdles would have to be overcome in the putting together of my first non-commercially built TT . . . . Considering you get about 2mm leeway in regards to spindle to pivot distance, I just don't fancy potentially messing up a plinth I've spent a matter of days spraying and glossing

After seeing the top guys do the same thing, I thought I'd have a bash at putting a proper power supply in my Mutec . . . . I chanced on a ready built power supply rather than making my own, although this will likely be done at a later date. Not the prettiest in town but it gives a solid output of 5v and is rated to 2A, so should be fine . . . . I had read on a couple of forums that guys were able to leave the 'dreaded' SMPS within the Mutec and simply hook up a 5v supply to the output pins from the SMPS and the input pins of the Mutec's main board. I managed to solder the power cable to the pins without too much devastation to the local components (now redundant on the SMPS anyway). Switched the power supply on . . . . . nothing, nowt. Not even the LED on the power supply was turning on. When I disconnected the Mutec, it came on fine. I drew the conclusion that the SMPS was trying to draw power (as sill in the circuit) although it did seem weird that absolutely nothing happened. I spoke to the builder of the power supply. He informed me that there is quite a sensitive overload protection circuit within the power supply and that the device it was powering may upon switch on trigger this circuit, shutting off the supply completely. This tallied up with the LED not even lighting up on the power supply. Back goes the power supply for some mods (and improvement actually). So in the mean time I set about doing it 'properly' and removing the SMPS completely from the Mutec. Turns out I'm fairly handy at removing components as the Mutec was disassembled with the SMPS out in about 20 mins maybe less. I was expecting it to put up more of a fight but XLR 'lever' simply slid out with a satisfying click and goes back in again just as easily, allowing full access to the main board. This also gave my an opportunity to use some nice CCC cable for the 5V umbilical cord so made up a length. With the cord made up it was time to solder to the main board, the CCC is thin enough to thread through the main board and solder quite neatly on both sides. I also made up a little perspex blanking plate for the cable to go through via an IP68 cable gland and dressed the cable with some thin cotton braid. Unfortunately the upgraded/sorted power supply won't reach me until tomorrow so I can't tell you how it sounds yet but I certainly will give my impressions when I can! It's the sort of thing I was a little apprehensive about given my lack of DIY/electrical know how. However with a few tips from our host and a bit of background research indicated it's not particularly daunting after all. I did try the supply in place with the SMPS removed and it did power the Mutec, lights on and everything, unfortunately the supply was limited to 3.5V due to the protection circuit still kicking in to some degree but at least I know it will work when fed the correct voltage. Update - The new 'modified' power supply has arrived and it's all plumbed in and working. So how does it sound . . . . . well, fine . . . but i have no valid reference as to what it sounded like before because I've gone and bought some potentially 'end-game' speakers . . . . stay tuned . . . .

Okay - in order to do the speakers and indeed the blog any justice, I'm going to have to get hold of a better camera.
My phone, for whatever reason, is just incredibly awful by any standards. I can draw better pictures I think . . . . So I'll take a few pics tonight with a different phone to go with the write up.
They really do deserve better, and so do you guys!

More speakers Chris really, you bad boy I know, you can't control this disease sometimes can you. Uncertainty at work, fuel, heating, electricity, food prices going through the fricking roof, two young children both still at nursery full time . . . . . go buy a pair of pretty expensive speakers of course . . . I blame quite a few people on here . . . .

can we just get to the new speakers already? Due to technical issues of images being of questionable quality, there will be a slight delay in this installment, but it should be all the better for it. I'm fed up with my phone camera churning out crappy pics so I'll deal with that tonight and make good on the updates tomorrow.

I don't even have a DAC, except for the one inside my CD player. I sense maybe a yorkshiremen sketch coming on...

CHris So B&W 802D's or PMC Fact 12 signatures? Much to your surprise (I'm sure) they actually out-spec most of what's available new or used. Certainly I think things have moved on a bit since the B&W's . . . and the PMC's are fairly out of my stratosphere . . . . Yes I know you can't go solely on response and specs but they actually play music too They're smaller than the Logans . . . not difficult.

A little more towards the more conventional than that I would say . . . . That's it for now until I get these pics sorted . . . might get some up tonight even although I'm going to the Albert Hall for the old man's birthday present to see Jeff Beck . . . . so might be late.
