Leo, do you have a Starkrimson loaner in the UK? I'm currently amp-less and would love a listen. There will in the next few months be a Starkrimson Streamer Ultra available. It is currently in the hands of Hi-Fi Choice. Once they are done it can be passed around. Also for anybody who is interested, I just wrote an article about GaN amplification in Compound Semiconductor magazine here: issuu.com/angelbusiness/docs/compound_semiconductor_issue_2_2022_lr/28There is current availability of the Starkrimson Monos (old version with 5k input impedance), you would have to contact Val-HiFi here: valhifi.co.uk/contact

I'll also be happy to coordinate a loan system via the forum, if you wish.

Ok so the Wolverine boards have been tested and will be sent out soon , if anyone is interested you can see measurements here www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/diya-store-wolverine-son-of-badger-suggestions.369758/page-80#post-6967721I will price up a BOM for them and decide what to do after this. The advantage of a Wolverine build is that I have a soldering iron already and will save about Β£300 on tooling up for smd action. That will help pay for cases etc so is looking π Thinking of power supplies, πwhat are the thoughts on 1 large cap vs smaller ones to make up the same values. Or does it all depend on the circuit etc? Meanwhile here are some dawgs!

Are you gonna do a build thread? Or saga? Would that be more accurate due to the time lol Well, once I finally decide what to do ! That will depend on a number of things, not least time (lack of) and a bit of (read a lot of!) power supply research. Trying to research massive value caps vs many smaller ones atm. The pondering stage still has legs dude.

Ok the latest news from Numpty Towers , I have ordered the Wolverine boards and read the build manual (40 pages ) , time to think seriously about the power supply. Going to aim for 60VDC, the boards can take up 50-70 so it's slap bang in the middle without going too overboard and stressing parts (or me) . It will mean I need 80v caps as a pose to 100v saving some money also. To test my (mis)understanding of circuits I've found and ordered a cheap 2*28v Toroidy tranny from ebay which I found and will wire up a rectifier and some spare caps in a mini power supply adventure from scratch and see what happens . Now considering a jaunt up the motorway on 8th May to see what all the fuss is about. BTW found these Dutch guys in my tinternet travels , they have a Mundorf cap sale on up to 30% and deliver to the UK with no VAT on so quite favourably comparable to hifi collective if you are looking for some stuff and find it there, some interesting other boards etc too. www.eltim.eu/en/

There will be at least three bonafide design wizards there, so why not pick their brains in-between listening to some music? We only needed 63v for the 686, but went with 80v due to the far better specs. I suggest having a rock solid look at the spec sheets of any cap before you buy it. Lowe ESR, High ripple, 105C or above and long life. Don't want to have to change them every three or four years.

That sounds far too sensible....
Great idea. π

Well, in case you had all thought that I had forgotten about this thread - well you're completely correct! However I have not been idle and done a lot of research on (mostly) power supplies, soft starts and speaker protection. To make sure that I understand some of the principles, costs and generally what I might be getting into. So based on all this and the fact that there a re now a number of Wolverine builds with issues raised and ironed out I will be going with this, hopefully a pair of mono blocks with LT4320 Active Rectifiers for the power supply , 44,000 uf power caps each rail and soft start with Neurochrome speaker protection. I will start a more relevant build thread sometime soon with pcb porn pics, as I have ordered a few bits from Mouser today and it should arrive sometimes this week. Mostly for the active rectifier boards and ground lift bits.

Well I've been thinking about it for ages and started to get the bits together. Had to save some pennies tooπ
