Many of you have innuos CD rippers . They seem to have a huge following. Picked up one this week . Taken quite a few days to get it working due to it having out dated software and having problems updating it . Well seems connecting directly to the router rather than WiFi mesh units is the answer .
Will be having a play to see if it improves on the transports I have

My Mk2 Zen is out for mending atm. It got stuck in a 'too many redirects' loop. Service support from Innuos is good.

A humble marantz sa8005 into a highly modded black ice dac. And a superb bel canto cd2 which is brilliant.
Yes the support from innuos is superb Initial listening seems to show the innuos is no better than my transport and I find the CD player less hassle but then I am a dinosaur!!

Well it's about 2k for the innuos and sonically I don't think it's better than my CD transport
Using my smartphone as a controller I am tempted to look at emails etc instead of just concentrating on the music
Maybe one day I will get one but not yet

Well mister c is partly responsible as he encouraged me to try them as did one or two others
They have big following on the forums with many loving them .The build quality is very good indeed and I can imagine they are very reliable

How's your transport connected?

If you've a decent transport, or a competent dac on all inputs I'd not expect any difference. Cd read errors are pretty much none existent on unscratched discs and there's plenty of dacs that are agnostic between usb ethernet, coax or toslink.
I too prefer spinning a disc to using file playback, I guess I'm just old fashioned. No SQ differences, I just prefer the routine and the fact I tend to play the whole album on cd.

As with CD transports Phil not all streamers are created equally, I have a couple of world class CD transports here a Wadia 270 SE and Esoteric P-02, neither of them can match the steaming transport I use for sheer believe ability and fluidity despite both of them being rather good I use them with the same cabling.

still comparing this piece of equipment . give it 10/10 for build quality. superbly quiet in ripping
3/10 for its app !
had a listening session tonight . battery flat on smartphone so i use the laptop . server would not recognise the laptop even though it recognises the device . waited for smartphone , ah great that connects and listen to a few albums . halfway through i close the app while still playing the album.... try to reconnect . oh it wont recognise the server .. grrrr . turn phone off and on again and its ok now .
maybe i am just a bit thick but i dont find the app very good even if the sound is excellent . sorry to be so negative but its a pain . i have used sonos for years with 100% reliabilty in connecting .

I would love to see how it compares to a purpose built PC. I doubt there would be much difference.

this is why I stick with CD. Put it in, press play, sit down, listen to music.
Maybe I am the odd one out but I don't need access to millions of albums most of which are either rubbish or not the sort of thing I'm interested in. I don't 'consume' music, I like to buy an album and listen to it many times and get familiar with every note.
If you already have the CD what's the point in copying it?
People go on about 'storage space' as though they live in a shoe box. You can shelve an alcove and fit ten thousand cds in it. How much music does anyone need? How much time do people have to listen to music anyway? None of it makes any sense to me.

Martin I totally get that 100%, the main issue with streamers (not so now) was the GUI no question, why do I wish to fart about attempting to connect router 'a' to streamer, then having drop outs poor software design and a crap touch screen response. These days you have Roon (NOT a fan I am a SQ guy) BUT its super slick, easy to use just connects each time and works well and is intuitive. Making the using experinace simple is the key for 85% of users. Listening to music around 50 hours a week plus a good 12 hours or so for 'proper listening' yes I will be the odd one out
Also fooking about with HQ player, let me see I can choose from 2e+ options and filters I need to make my dac sound good really?
So I wish to upsample my music to the stars to 1.5Mhz (Holo & Denifrips dac's) listen to those trumpets in afr, far far left of the centre stage 2.5 miles back , howabout I just press play??? Audio nerds form an orderly queue
That said the internal os on the new Wadia is 2.82Mhz (but thats hardware thats my excuse!)
I am personally not convinced by audio usb but realise a lot of the guys use PC's if you are going this route really do think of decent total galvanic isolation and or a DDC.
We use an industrial usb isolator that is both electrically and optically isolated in the lab for keeping the test equipment getting spurious signals from the lab PC its has a PSRR if you like of below the measurement ability of the AA, however I use it when testing dacs on the R&S audio analyser.

Tony
I am not one for tweaking unless the sound quality is not up to my expectations (which are pretty high).
Also computers get on my tits as software is very poor these days with the end user expected to be the beta tester. Otherwise I would be making a ton in IT instead of scraping a living in credit management.
I appreciate that some people like to tweak for the sake of it, even though they already have superb sound. For me it was only ever a means to an end but I would not stand in the way of anyone who wants to.
For those about to tweak, we salute you (yes we do).

This is my point, I have farted about enough now to know what really works, and I just wish to press play and hey presto music rather than click two dozen+ FIR and algorythm combinations so I do get the basic plug and play 100%

One more thing - most of the time I when I feel like listening to music I don't know specifically what I want to listen to. So I browse the shelves until something catches my eye.
You can't really do that with streaming. When someone puts a tablet in my hands and says pick something to play I get brain freeze the same as I do when I walk into a record shop. (I know there are a few records that I want to buy but at that moment in time I can't recall any of them. So I browse the shelves instead).
Okay, with the tablet you can just type in a genre and it gives you a million choices, but that's too many. Plus most will be crap. With my own collection I know already that they are all albums I like. I add a new one on average twice a month, and that seems to be enough for me.

I tend to agree Martin, having moved to a CD transport in the last couple months and am finding that I could pare my CD library down a bit even since what gets played in 12 month period is a good bit smaller. I will probably go back to file-based playing though for a few reasons: my wife would like a simple way to stream music she likes, both albums and playlists; some recordings I'm interested in are not easily available by CD (both old and new music).
Of course, I do like to tweak, but have become a bit disillusioned with all the boxes and complications often used for good file-based USB playback, hence the interest in DDC as a possible box-lowering solution.

I have my albums on server so I can select my music no problem, the issue with have so many CD's and just have a rotation of say 50 is bit restrictive for myself, so I have instant access to my music when i want it.
I could not go back to CD 's now only for demo's (BTW I have been using FBA snce 2006!)

I have about 500 cd's and another 50 albums downloaded in hires. I have all of those plus another 200 albums as flac on my macbook. I just prefer doing the disc thing, I don't use playlists and Spotify is only any good for getting drunk in the kitchen with guests round.
It's horses for courses.

Getting up off your (fat) arse, is a pain in the bum to change cd's nowadays, when you have instant access on a remote/iphone/i-pad to all the music you need with a server. Who of you wants to go back to tv's without a remote control?
