I owned a pair of Amphion Xenon floorstanders. Unfortunately I didn't get on with them at all. Dynamically bland, tonally grey and just plain tedious.
From Show experiences, their standmounts are a lot more interesting.

I listened for a long while in the Amphion room at the last Brissol show and to be truthful it was a very pleasant sound I could have heard for many hours.

Adjusting treble energy very important as so many rooms differ

Personally I have to use a combination of digital room correction, acoustic treatment AND adjust the crossovers on the speakers . . . .

It's not just speakers, although I seriously doubt that any amount of tweakery would have made me like the Amphion Xenons. They were just a mess imho.
My current DAC of choice is just a bit forward and glarey - so introducing a lower treble dip of 1.5dB with my Behringer DEQ2496 digital equaliser sorts that out nicely and provides a superb overall presentation imo.

Can't say enough good things about that DEQ Jerry, currently using it for both digital and analogue duties independent L&R channels AES/EBU in and out, fully balanced XLR in and out. Just a plethora of usability and tweak-ability. Far from ideal in a purist sense but who has an ideal room with kit to match? Interesting that it sounds like you use it to remove (or to that effect) 'glare' etc, do you think that is inherent of the DAC or some sort of reflection from walls/windows etc? What DAC are you currently running?

What DAC are you currently running? I'm sure the touch of glare is inherent to the DAC, Chris. Most other DACs I've used don't have it. It's a XiangSheng DAC05Aii, I use it with the valve buffer output. I'm able to dial in the cut by ear, adjusting the centre frequency, width and amount of reduction. Easy to do with the Behringer. Of course, as it's done by ear, it's only intended to sound enjoyable. I suspect that an in room measurement would show some interesting things!

Interesting, I had the old version of that DAC, for the price you can't really argue. I like the dual toroidal transformers in this one too, a lot of DAC for the money. Any interest in tube rolling? As I always find the Chinese ones they come with a bit shrill and edgy . . . . As it happens I've got some spare Russian 5670 tubes (which are equivalent to the ones in this), they're infinitely better than the Chinese ones I've heard. Like I say I've got a few if you'd like to try one? You can have it no charge

Hey, many thanks, Chris, but I think I'm sorted. I've currently got a nice GE 5670 valve in there. Yes, a nice improvement on the stock Chinese. And yesterday I won a pair of nearly new Western Electric 396a on ebay. Previous experience indicates this should be the ultimate. Of course, I'll have one WE to spare if anyone is interested!

If you can I would implore you to get hold of an RCA 'Command' 5670 . . . it's the best there is imo. The WE is very VERY sweet but top to bottom the RCA has it all, awesome low end texture and detail.

Awesome thread drift here!
Maybe different tastes or different system synergy or different music requirements (I'm 100% classical) , but I tried an RCA Command in my old XiangSheng DAC 01A and I preferred the WE.
But I'll keep an eye out for one if not too expensive. Maybe it'll work better for me in the DAC05Aii than in the DAC 01A.

Had the 3s in situ for a few days now . Used with a very modest arcam a85 and onkyo sacd player and chord oddy speaker cable. Treble set to standard at the back Very live sound that is pretty good despite the very bright room. Smooth but lively .soundstage not brilliant. However playing Zimmer 2049 did result in vibration to my listening chair as these have impressive bass . Very balanced sound . After a few days I changed to 25 watt f5 monoblocks with bc pre 3 vbs and marantz sa8005 with van damme 6mm studio speaker cable Immediately you could hear very big improvement in soundstage which was quite striking . I have a sneaky suspicion that these would be even better with more power but they are continuing to improve with better amps Listening continues... these are the 3s P1070794 by , on Flickr P1070793 by , on Flickr P1070796 by , on Flickr

been using the 3s with 25 watt F5 clones monoblocks . excellent sound . popped in some icepower asx 50 monoblocks as i reckon the 3s like plenty of power . the icepower lean towards being a bit warm with my tannoys and they were just excellent with the amphion . very engaging and transparent but still can listen for a fair while without fatigue . still assessing them . Early next year will have a moonriver 404 reference to try but will do separate thread re moonriver amps

Had the moonriver on the argon one and pretty decent sound . Have to say these don't disappoint at all . Extremely impressive speaker , lovely with vocals .very balanced sound and compelling . Will give these 9.5 out of 10
They even sound good with the modest arcam
