I took up the Roon offer of 3 months for $1 yesterday and set it up today. Installed the server on to my Surface laptop and setup RoPiee on one of my Pi4's with a USB DAC connected - very simple and straight forward.
The server sees the PI (well, shows the DAC) and music from my NAS started to stream.
Initial thoughts. Easy to use and a nice interface. If you just want to listen to albums from your collection then it is over kill. If you want to use Tidal and discover similar types of music, then very good.
I have 3 months to decide if it's something I will keep or not.
So far, not sure.

Try Qobuz as well before deciding, some say it sounds better, to be honest we couldn't tell the difference, but it is a little cheaper.

Roon and Qobuz are two different things. Qobuz is just a streaming Roon just organises yer files, but you can play Qobuz through it. It’s a tricky one to justify these days as I stream almost everything and the NAS gets little action. However what Roon is great for if you have multiple systems. It also finds my chord mojo/poly.. so I can stream Qobuz to my headphones when in the garden during the summer. It’s also great for finding out info about artists and similar artists. I’m keeping it but it’s only because it makes life easy. Probably not really worth the money.

I know Roon organises files Steve, I probably worded my reply wrongly but it was in context with Tidal, but everyone likes being corrected as my brother and me jokingly say

I was pretty attracted to Roon at first and considered how to budget for it. But these are the things that held me back. YMMV:
- The integration with streaming was key and Tidal’s future has been so tenuous that it seemed a risk.
- The monthly price can be rationalised but the lifetime price just seems bit overblown.
- I’ve noticed that when I use Allmusic, Last FM, and others whilst listening to music, my ‘left brain’ is more active but the part of me that enjoys and gets ‘reset’ by music is more ‘right brain’. So I’m moving towards things that don’t focus my attention in ‘left brain’ ways whilst listening.

You've lost me there Bruce. On the last bit? Most users swoon about the interface of Roon giving you all this information about the recording, tbhe performance, the musicians, the supporting musicians, other albums by the same musicians, etc. That all engages the left brain, more analytical, informational. When I listen to music, I most enjoy it when my right brain is engaged with the sweep, flow, and feelings of the music. So Roon it seems would constantly tempt me with left brain pursuits related to the music and keep me from "entering in".
Does that help?

I know what you mean. With no Roon, I would choose an album to listen too and that would be it. With Roon I was constantly being led down the rabbit hole and the music seems to be secondary. Not noticed any change in the SQ (although I had a few albums recorded in MP3 128 - shame..... - and they did seem to sound better than I remember) So far still not sure I would spend the dosh.

Yes, thank you, my problem being my brain is situated a little lower down my body than yours

Volumio have updated the software which I updated my PI last week and got to say it is a great interface now. Listening to Roon this morning, I noticed a few glitches in play back so switched to Volumio and the SQ to my ears is a lot better and no glitches heard. I have the basic Volumio package (which you can no longer get) which allows CD ripping and Tidal/Spotify connect (I use it as a Roon endpoint too - have another PI with a USB DAC as a Roon endpoint) and the only things Roon appears to give more than Volumio is multi-room play and info on the artist/track etc. If I upgrade the package I get this with Volumio and it will be cheaper than Roon but not interested in multi-room and I can get the info off of my phone if needed (less chance of going down the rabbit hole I mentioned above)
Yes, the interface for Roon is good but for me I can't see me sticking with it.
