I have no experience with it but this looks interesting: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165107296548?hash=item2671296924:g:u5wAAOSwg2xhWrFsI know you said R2R but I'm a huge fan of the TDA1541 chip. It has all that analogue lovelyness . . . . It has two proper toroidal transformers, one for digital side and one for analogue. The MHDT dac's are quite well liked but I did once hear a "Canary" I think it was along side my Musical Paradise MP D2 DAC, the Musical Paradise trumped it in every department, although I concede it was a different model to the one being discussed. Nice find, I see he also has a cheaper one that has usb input. Time for me to throw another spanner into Cagey's search for a dac, never heard it but my money would be on it being very good, sorry Kevin doge.audio/product/doge-7-tube-dac/Yeah the cheaper version uses an inferior board and cheaper parts all round. The more 'expensive' one will sound much better, more than the extra cost anyway. It's vintage technology re-imagined a bit.

It wasn’t long ago you were after a Sabre DAC? Sabre X or something… It was a Matrix Sabre Pro. Did you ever get to hear one?

I only read the subjective reviews after I've had a listen for myself to avoid contaminating my purity

That was a lucky escape, I will say sorry you missed it if it was something you would have liked to try, certainly looked like a bargain price.

Any thoughts on the Lite DAC 60? PCM1704 chips, and 6922 output valves. This one here - Lite DAC 60

I have been playing music for a couple of hours yet, and my DAC has yet to bore the bollox of a charging rhino at 60 paces. Sure, it could be better, but I am quite happy with it, so the search for a new DAC will go on hold.
Ignorance is indeed bliss….

Seeing the love for the SAEC 3C cable elsewhere, any thoughts on the USB version? Do you think it will be worth a shout...

Seeing the love for the SAEC 3C cable elsewhere, any thoughts on the USB version? Do you think it will be worth a shout... I'd be interested inlistening impressions too. In my audition of several USB cables a few years ago, I could hear so little difference between them that I didn't purchase anything over a basic Lindy. But when I put a microRendu in the mix, It sounded better with the Cardas hard-adapter than 2-3 other cables. Between non-USB cables I usually hear differences that matter to me, but less so on USB... which doesn't mean I won't audition and compare again in the future!

Any thoughts on the Denafrips Ares? I know a few have bought them, so interested in the long term view.

Just weighing up my options, so I am ready when the right DAC comes along at the right price.
If I understand correctly, a 2nd hand Soekris 1321 would also be good, as I can add a linear PSU easily, where the 1421, or above, would mean playing with a soldering iron.
One thing I am going to try is a Graham Slee Majestic. This I will substitute in for my KIN and RME ADI-2, feed the 686 with the balanced connection and see what that does.

Interesting find there, I really do wonder how these 'older' R2R's sound. Probably a bit rolled off but in a warm cuddly way I'd imagine.

I remember those, good dac used to use one with the Monarch dip (early recocker lol) always a good entertaining sound.
True NOS is a quite laid back, rich tonally, fluid and pretty much grain free and a non fatiguing listen it was always pitched at the TT lovers who thought they knew best lol
If you really love the TT style of sound then a genuine NOS is a must listen imho
They are some exceptions but these tend to be on the expensive side!

Kevin, my 1321 sounds absolutely stunning, I added an LPS too. 1321 Pre amp bypassed, just using DAC. Gary
