Just to conclude this really,
I have now plugged the TT/phonostage/preamp back into the BMU and the noise has reduced further.
The Amp is on its own socket via the DC blocker and the Variac.
The only noise now is from the casework, from the TF itself and it's almost completely gone from the speakers. It must like the BMU, which I have also read elsewhere.
I'll still be replacing the TFs because I want to do it. I think they will benefit from a proper spec Transformer as does CC Poon.
A bigger DC blocker is also in the pipeline.
Let's see.

The odds of it being a mains problem are very small so I think you are on the right track.
I'm guessing you have checked to make sure the traffos are firmly bolted down to the case? Have you tried damping the case? Just from the outside, put a heavy book on it or something.
IMV absolutely nothing should hum, ever, either through the speakers or from the internals. There really is no need for it or any excuse for putting up with it. Shocks me how many people say they have a bit of hum but just live with it.

How are the transformers bolted down? A mate fixed his amps by adding damping washers between the transformer and clamping washer.

There's enough noise in this house without the equipment adding to the problems. Yes, checked everything for tightness etc. It'll be new Traffos as it's simply the best long term fix.

Probably an upgrade too.

Quite possibly but the goal is silent running. I won't know if there is an improvement in performance in the PROs as I have only tried to find out what's wrong with them. The SM-70 is now quiet enough for use but requires some form of voltage reduction and DC blocker.
