Ha, I was brave! I've ordered the E30 DAC from Banggood - it was on offer at less the £100 new. Hopefully it arrives this side of Xmas! I have had a better look at the MP303 - sounds great, so many reviews agree with you Optical. However, I have two sets of speakers and a subwoofer - how would I power the sub too? Thanks What sub are you using and does it use hi level input (REL type) or is it a normal RCA type input? I've run REL subs from it no problem but if it can't use a hi-level input you may have some complications but it can be overcome. Are you intending to run all the speakers at the same time? It only has outputs for one pair but powering two pairs of speakers presenting a normal load would not be too much of an issue I would say. Also you could always run a preamp before it (having the volume control set high or removing it completely as I have done). Then any sub can be controlled by the preamp. I have two Dynaudio M1 speakers and a EAW’s SB48zP subwoofer. This is from the speaker details: System: 2-way Passive Nearfield Monitor Frequency Response (+/- 3 dB): 50 Hz - 20 kHz Peak SPL 1m, pair (IEC Short Term): > 130 dB peak Peak SPL 2m, 5.1 (IEC Short Term): > 131.5 dB peak Amplifier minimum: 50 W (> 100 dB SPL @ 1,5m) Sensitivity (2.83 V/1m): 91 dB Impedance, Nominal: 4 ohm Impedance, HF (200 kHz): 3,5 ohm Sub details: Power Handling Operating Range 31 Hz to 141 Hz 400W @ 8ohms Max SPL 126 dB (Half Space) Input Impedance (ohms) Nominal Minimum LF 8 7.9 @ 141 Hz The photos are of one of the speakers and the sub. The is is the connector at the back of the sub - Is is the REL type? Is there an option to use either that or direct bare wire? Thanks!

Okay great, I'll have a think about how best to connect it all up. Gonna be a nice little system I think. Get a couple of things on this pm but will get back to you when I can. Cheers

No rush, I'm really apricating your help. Most of this is all new to me and over my head. I'm very happy for the lessons from you all!

No rush, I'm really apricating your help. Most of this is all new to me and over my head. I'm very happy for the lessons from you all! So looking a bit more closely at your subwoofer it looks to run with no adjustable crossover or frequency response/volume control etc. Unfortunately this is unlikely to sound any good at all with any amp unless it provides DSP or some kind of crossover options. Otherwise you're not going to be able to 'blend' the sub with the speakers. You'll have the low end response of the speakers (somewhere around 50hz I'd imagine) fighting with the sub response (which starts around 140hz) so a big clash of frequencies there. If the sub only came in around 60hz it would probably sound okay apart from the lack of volume control, which is also a potential issue. Sorry a lot of bad news there in afraid. Your options would be: A) run a custom crossover box directing desired frequencies to the sub and the speakers respectively whilst adding attenuation control to the sub. Or B) get a sub or a pair which can do all the above, built in crossover and volume control. REL would be my recommendation or possibly BK. I could be wrong but that's how it looks I'm afraid.... The sub you have is more aimed at the public address/AV market and to be used with processors which can send a specific frequency signal to them, rather than a full range hifi one. Not really suitable for a hifi amp as such, again not what you wanted to hear I'm sure. Someone better informed might be able to give some more info but that's my take on it mate. Chris

I agree. You could split the signal at the source so one goes to an amplifier with an EQ unit that powers the sub, and the other goes to an amplifier that powers the speakers. I'm assuming the sub is passive, looks like it is. That way you can independently adjust the frequencies being fed into the sub and match it to the speakers. There's cheap ways of doing that (under a ton) or more expensive but better ways. cheap way is two Y splitters (1 male to 2 female) and an amp with built in EQ cost about 2 quid each and an amp like this JVC www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255189326960?hash=item3b6a781c70%3Ag%3Ao-YAAOSwgkNhcUAA&LH_BIN=1 that lets you cut all the higher frequencies so they won't be fed to the sub. Just set all the sliders except the one on the extreme left to the bottom. Then you can adjust the volume level of the sub to how you want it. Not an ideal solution but will work and only cost about sixty quid including all the cables and it gets your sub up and running at least for now.

Ahhhhh! Maybe onto plan B then. Ideally, I don't want to have anything complicated. I'll look at getting rid of that sub and look out for something more suitable. All of these were bought at an auction for a bar/club that had gone into administration. Great idea at the time!
Where is a good place to look out for used equipment other than Ebay - the forum here?
Anyone want to put a price on that sub?!
Thanks for the technical help.

Looking at the for sale ads for your model people are asking £200 to £300 for them. I don't know if they are fetching that but it gives you an idea. Optical probably the best man on here to recommend a more suitable replacement for it.

That thing looks awesome! Maybe for my headphones once the other thing is sorted.

It's been very good of you to keep at the suggestions and advice. I'm going to have a look into a few more things and see what I should have bought! I might try to off load the "bargains" and start from scratch.
The start of my hifi education has been fun, thanks for the help! No doubt I'll be back soon to ask more silly questions!

Sorry, my link was not really a suggestion Henry, just that I'd heard of Musical Paradise, the 301 doesn't have enough 'grunt' for your needs, and also hang on regarding tube headphone amps, there are some equally nice looking ones which are dedicated to headphones.
