Hope you are all sitting down comfortably - looking for some guidance.
Always used normal everyday tonearms (Linn, Rega, SME, Lenco etc) and generally never had an issue with hum being generated through the speakers.
I have two 12 inch tonearms, one is a unipivot with a titanium arm tube and the other is a gimbal with a wooden arm. The wires in both are not shielded and terminate with RCA female connectors so I can use my own RCA cables.
The SP-10 is on the right hand side of the rack with the Myryad pre-amp and Firebottle OTP underneath. Lower down on this side is the power amp and the PSU for the SP-10
When both are used on the SP-10 I get a lot of hum from the speakers and even when I earth the base and arm with the unipivot and the base of the gimbal arm, the hum is still there and annoying.
Yesterday I decided to try a few things to work out the source of the hum.
I replaced my power block ( a 20 plus year old 12 socket affair that came from a computer room) with a couple of standard 4 socket units.
No difference.
Could it be the phono stage? Was using the Firebottle so swapped this out for a VSPC battery jobbie.
No difference.
Tried the arm in the BB3 which is on the left (top is the Orbe, below is the BB3 and the PI streamer, bottom is the Orbe PSU (QC) and PSU for the BB3.
Silent, the arm was well away from the rack. Moved the arm near the the BB3 and still quiet, but near the PI serious hum.
What is the best way to stop the hum apart from move everything further apart or change to an arm with fully shielded cables?
I think I need to move the SP-10 to the left and move all the electronics to the right?
