I get that Rob, but it the quality of the box that I won't sacrifice. It's by far the best case I have found, and it will match the Avalon. It was a deliberate design decision. If the colour is a deal breaker, I accept it. Ive made 2 BB3's a month since 03/2020. They've all been silver, except for one. Suggests that performance is more important than the colour to me 😉 Of course Olster, no worries, I'm still hoping for a listen and we'll see what occurs Don't worry Rob, by the time I'm done with you, there will be none of that Sansui gear left 🤣

What about hydro dipping the faceplate?
Or even a custom coater that does wheels ?
I thought about getting my son in law to hydro dip my SP 10 plinth with some funky design. He’s brilliant at powder coating wheels too.

Neither case look as good in black.

Neither case look as good in black. It's strange and as you say you may not even get a request for one in black, then again you might. How bad would it look in black ? Cant imagine bad in the true sense, just as you say not as good as the silver, even that might be subjective to the odd guy who would think it looks better in his rack with the rest of his black kit, than any fantastic looking silver piece. All I'm saying is, that if there's a black case that is fit for the purpose then it would make sense to have it as the option case for anyone who would like a black BT2.

Sorry to go on Bigman, but I'm 100% with Robbie on this, I wouldn't want silver either ( I'm not in the market for one by the way ) and reading forums I feel many would feel the same. Ok, the case you have chosen is the best you can find in your opinion, but surely another option can be given in black, even if it costs £50 more. I don't know how much you are going to sell the pre for, but from what you have said it will be at least £1k, for me at least, spending this sort of money another £50 to match the rest of the system would not be a deal breaker, you could ask the question on here.

I have all black on my rack, topped off with the silver BB3, which I think looks excellent, makes the quality of the unit stand out, however, just shows everyone has different views and opinions, which is great.

The issue is twofold really,
1) The finish quality is not as good as when the unit comes in its intended silver form.
2) Finding an anodising company is a doddle, but finding one that doesn't want £150-175 for the work is an issue.
Most of the metal finishing companies i have spoken to don't want to do one or two pieces, once in a blue moon. That's why the cost becomes prohibitive.
Whilst I have never personally cared what colour the gear is, I know it's important to other people, but it's not as simple as "just find a metal finishers!"
This morning i spoke to the one I used previously. Their quote was £155-175 per box, cash price. They did a nice job, but it is not cheap. Don't forget, my time and diesel would have to be factored in too, and that's why you end up at the £200 mark.
If you guys want to pay an extra £200 for a black box to match the other boxes in your system, then I'll do black ones too. It doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the sound quality though.

There must be a black case out there somewhere that will do the job, like I said, if it does cost more the price will go up, but I'm sure not to the value of £150+.

There are specific reasons for that choice of casework, mainly its heavyweight construction and sound deadening propertied from being so heavyweight. Ideally, I would have liked to have it machined out of a billet of aluminium, but the costs of that are ridiculous. Angus and I have spent hour upon hour looking for the right metal work, then more hours and more money making sure the casework didn't hinder the performance of the unit, then more hours and money making sure everything is optimised for the way we want to do the build. The casework isn't negotiable, nor is the price. If you want it in black, the work costs what the work costs.

The cost premium at the end of the day doesn't matter, if it sounds and looks how you want it to, then all is good. Also knowing the BB3, the SQ up will be up there with the best and will have cost more than the unit + black premium by atleast a factor of 2 if you were to go for an equivalent SQ mainstream unit.

And if you're aiming at the 'High End' add another couple of grand on at least because if it's too cheap those punters won't take it seriously as they work on price=sound quality.

Is it just me, or are people missing the most fundamental principles of having uniform coloured kit? How the hell do you sneak in another box or two without it being the same colour? It’s me isn’t it?
