Great idea for a thread and a tough one to answer without some deeper thought. My first impressions are:
Pros:
1. I love seeing other people’s journeys, I’m not even a member of Chews but I’ve seen lots of your changes over the years. Same goes for just about anyone who posts about their system and room on a U.K. forum and many who do so on a US one too. I guess it’s like I can get the same enjoyment by proxy.
2. I love when someone rediscovers an old gem. Something forgotten or maybe which never really got recognition in it’s day. Anyone who finds something in a product I dismissed or overlooked is a real fascination for me.
3. Some of the non hifi stuff I like too. Finding out a bit about people other than their hifi is great for me. If I may say, it’s one thing I enjoy about Rudis posts. He does a great job on a floor and shows his work. He has a muscle car and I get to enjoy it too. He takes pride in the home he built from nothing, all great stuff I like to see.
4. I also like the sales and swaps. There is nothing like buying from and selling to other forum members. So many have proven to be absolute diamonds. You also know the provenance of what you buy and if you sell to someone like Gromit, you see the kit you once had look amazing! Of course you then want to buy it back, but that’s the way it goes I guess.
Cons:
1. Petty personal arguments, back-stabbing, childish vendettas that last a decade and anything else that gets in the way of enjoyment.
2. Trolls, I’m not talking about a bit of mild poking. I mean those who only come to find an argument and cause a ruckus. I don’t need or want them in my life.
3. Cliques that pick on new members or solo posters who don’t have their own gang of mates for backup.
4. Anyone who forces their opinion on others. There is plenty room in hifi to differ and noth be “right” in the context of your own room, ears and system.

best place to get advice on a forum..many folk like dsjr know a hell of a lot..crazy in fact.
BUT. there's some real losers and sado's on forums..many have no lives and in fact let their entire lives revolve around the net..

do not ever take what's written on forums seriously..IT'S ONLY A FEKIN FORUM..
if you want to have a fight with someone or slag them off .keep quiet get in ya car and go visit them..otherwise STFU. you got beef with somebody pm them.then ask if you can meet up..sort it out that way. nope many just sit there and want to cause trouble. scary stuff imho..
the real world for me is well away from meeting people to listen to or discuss hifi..heard lots of kit in my time and most has been dreadful. heard a 50k mcintosh system here last year..utter junk..best systems i have heard have been well synergized cheap systems..to me high end just means brightness..something i refuse to have.
i never even go to car meets..too many folk are very competative with their THINGS..i cba with all that..there's always someone at say a car meet with a faster and better car than you and they look down their nose at you.
today i keep myself to myself..go almost nowhere..my biking days are over.
hifi meet ups lol..never ever in my life

Happy to share experiences, but no so happy when I was being all but stalked by two or three individuals from one particular forum to another - nearly walked away but not strong enough  Thanks for putting up with me and hope I can contribute something useful. Still so much to learn and investigate... |

I have loved your insights from behind the scenes too. You just cannot hear any of that from anyone else. The people involved in making the products are fascinating to so many of us. The U.K. hifi industry has had so many characters, geniuses and free thinkers. Their story isn’t told anywhere else. You’ve met them and in chatting to you about them I’ve been able to share in that. |

A potential 25% discount off NVA is relevant to a thread discussing NVA amplifiers. It is not discussing the HFS forum or any of the forum personalities.
I'm not a trader but even if I were, or even if Richard had posted it here himself, then it would not appear to contradict this:

That reminds me of something else I like about forums. Special offers only available to members. AoS have a few, HFS have had a few, PFM and Wam have had some good group buys. I also made good use of the Wam Taxi over the years. All good stuff AFAIC.

Pros: I am confronted by people with violently different values and opinions to my own. Cons: I am confronted by people with violently different values and opinions to my own. I'm not trendy. So instead... For me the hifi community starts on-line. I don't know anyone who is a real hifi-nut who I have not met online. For me these communities have the following functions and pros: 1. Practical. Forums have provided me with information about, and access to hifi kit that I would have been very much less likely to have discovered if the online hifi community did not exist. So for me, a vital source of information. 2. Social. There are some senses of connection and identity that I get from the hifi community. Also, several people I have met online have become friends. I find the cons of the hifi community are those that "plague" almost all human social life. Namely politicisation, tribalisation and status-seeking. (And, I feel myself getting sucked in to that too of course.) Some of the more extreme stuff that I see going-on in the wider hifi-community makes the polarisation in the UK over Brexit seem like helpful and rational debate. I suppose one 'pro' of the partisanship that segregates the hifi community is that it is as entertaining as it is depressing. |

Art was a member of the last forum but the nonsense that didn’t belong on a hifi forum drove him away. I’ve always liked and respected the guy’s posts. He and Gromit got me to try (and re-try) Sonneteer. I only wish he’d joined this forum rather than the abortion that was my first attempt.
I still look out for his posts on the US forums. Just like Gromit, there’s a genuine pleasure from his experiences being expressed eloquently and in a way that I can relate to. They bring their experiences to life, I suppose.
