I often wake up at 5:30 and find myself down in the basement listening to something. This morning Roon alerted me to a new album by Lump.. a collaboration with Laura Marling. I like her music but find it all a bit ‘woolly jumper’. However after listening to a few tracks I was really grabbed. I really really like this. So I thought sod it, get the vinyl. Couldn’t believe they are actually selling cassettes of the album too! What’s going on?

Cassettes have been a thing again for a few years now. I can only speculate that it's some sort of novelty format for 'millennials'. I'm sure everyone our age was glad to see the back of them. Unless it's a nostalgia thing.

I gave mine away and all my tapes too. Replaced them all with CD. But I did use to listen to tapes a lot, probably more than vinyl. The main problem with them was they often weren't long enough to fit an entire album on one side so the last song would cut off half-way through. Really annoying if the last song on the album was the best one (e.g 'The Stone Roses') I always dreamed of having a top Nakamichi but could never afford one. Now I can I've no use for it. Sometimes you can't go back and sometimes you could but there's no point.

Then we had our first basement flood. Massive insurance claim.. and I showed the loss adjuster all my damaged cassettes. They ended up giving me a voucher for several hundred quids worth of ‘our price’ cd’s. Certain irony that these too are now unused in the loft.

I had a JVC then replaced that with a Sony but they were both bottom of the range. Even the cheapest Nak was never on the cards not even second-hand. This was what a friend had back in the day (1991) Technics RS-B965, very good deck but was about£500 back then so about £1500 in today's money:

I loved the format and have hundreds of them (pre recorded and home recorded) in a suitcase. Have a DCC player (no DCC's though as sold them years ago - great idea and great sound - to my ears) but boxed up and in the garage - oh dear....

I think the thing I loved most was recording vinyl from my Roksan Xerxes and then having the ability to sort of reproduce it in the car.

I've still got a Sony DAT deck and some blank tapes. Never used it though. Can't even remember why I bought it now.

Artists have had bugger all money in the last 18 months so I should imagine they are just trying to cover all bases by supplying fans with as many formats as possible to sell as many units as possible.

Must have been a dreadful time when musicians can only make money through performing. I love the ability to stream… but the financial model is broken.

Napster was what really broke the music industry, streaming only came along later into the aftermath. Remember this? Which they were running when physical music sales were at their all-time high. Basically 'We're making a shitload of money but we could be making a bit more so we'll threaten you with the law.' Little did they know what was around the corner. Now the streaming services are paying the artists next to nothing and they're still making a loss, can't go on forever.

I had no idea pre recorded tapes were being sold again, ok years ago I had a cheapo machine, maybe a Trio, it was my least favourite source always sounding thick and congested, took the life out of the music.

I owned a Nak I think it was entry level. CR-1 ?? www.cassettedeck.org/nakamichi/cr-1 Can't say that I was impressed with the sound. I bought it purely for nostalgia and then sold it on a couple of months later. I'd love to try a R2R.

Reel to Reels are cool but it's like owning a vintage Ferrari - expensive and requires constant maintenance to keep it running optimally.
If you own the CD of an analogue recording then you're essentially listening to the R2R machine that they used to transcribe it to digital, which was probably one of the big Otaris or similar which cost a fortune then and still cost a fortune now.

Cost isn't everything. It's the experience of having one and trying the format, but, more importantly for me, having some fun. I love maintaining things and R2R might be the next evolution in my audio journey. I always fancied a Revox as a starter.

I always fancied one too for the same reasons although thankfully the desire has waned in recent years.

Dcc, I owned two, only good for eating tapes... I've owned 2. Never had an issue with eating tapes and I found the play back of the analogue tape was very good. The DCC tapes sounded, to my ears, just like CD!
