Hi all - need some expertise please…Asking on behalf of a mate.
He’s got an SL-1210mk2 with Ortofon 2M Bronze connected to an Emotiva PT-100 pre-amp which has a built-in MM/MC phono stage. He’s connected the ground wire to the grounding post on the PT-100, but has noted that the PT-100 itself only has a fig-8 power inlet and therefore does not appear to be earthed. How can the turntable be earthed if the equipment it’s connected to isn’t earthed? Does the ground wire need to be connected to an independent earth?
I obviously would have thought a reputable manufacturer like Emotiva would have this covered. Thing is he heard a couple of sharp ‘bangs’ from the direction of his gear a few days ago (not in use at the time), and can’t figure out what caused them. Following these ‘bangs’ he subsequently noticed that the cantilever on his cartridge was heavily skewed to one side. Neither of us could figure out how the two could be connected, although it seems like a remarkable coincidence. He’s adamant nothing else could have happened to it since he last used it. The turntable earthing is the only thing we thought didn’t seem quite right.
Thanks for any advice!

If its a two pin plug it's double insulated, the unit is earthed signal wise via the shield/gnd on the signal wires to whatever its plugged into.
Nothing to do with whatever else happened, and unlikely to ever cause any noise, loafs of hifi is double insulated.

Yup, agree with Simon.
The TT isn't "earthed" it's grounded, which is a shielding method for the cable and internal wiring of the arm. It's not working in the same way.
Noises are likely from an appliance in the home switching off and on etc.
Had that here today. It's what happens when sensitive equipment is on the same ring main as a fridge or microwave.

OK thanks gents.
Any way to stop the interference from a noisy appliance?
Sounds like he needs to rethink his view that the kids couldn’t possibly have damaged his stylus as well….

He confirmed that the room his hifi is in is on a separate ring main from the consumer unit.

He confirmed that the room his hifi is in is on a separate ring main from the consumer unit. That's not always a surefire way to be sure as it all goes to the same consumer unit. That's the issue here. As of yet I have not found a way to stop it from happening, other than to change the equipment that was doing it.
