Not some crappy music centre that your dad would say 'It cost a lot of money that' but how long since your first proper 'separates' system and what was it?
33 years for me soon. Richer Sounds in Liverpool, August 1988. Bought a Tensai turntable, Fisher 'Studio Sound' amp and Fisher speakers, ST70 or something.
It was £120 the lot, all brand new bin end.
The Speakers were crap they were the first thing to go, and the it was onto the slippery
slope.

1985 - sold my car to buy my first proper HiFi.
Michell Syncro TT with Linn LVX arm and Linn K5 cart
Audiolab 8000A amp
Heybrook HB1 speakers
Was awesome
Still have the amp and the speakers are used by my brother-n-law.

I bought a set of Sony seperates in 1998, proper things with Wharfdale Valdus 500 speakers that i used until 2006
I Then dropped off until 2015 when i bought a NAD 312, Celestion DL6 speakers and a Rotel TT with AT110 mm cart. I loved it.

Late 80’s I’d moved jobs and house and we had some funny money available.
Went and got a Roksan Xerxes with rega arm, an Ion Obelisk 3x/xpac into a pair of Royd Edens.
It was a great system and was at a time of brilliant music.
Britannia music would deliver a couple of new vinyl albums each month... many of which I still play.
Still have the Roksan and Edens. Not really sure why anymore.

1996, Aiwa CD player and amp and a pair of Genexxa speakers from Tandy, I think the separates were about £120 each and the speakers were £80.

Well it's close on 50 years, and I purchased a Pioneer 112D tt, A & R 60 (can't remember if I had an amp before this one) and Celestion Ditton 33's, got to admit my Dad helped a bit  My brother bought this when I left home and I purchased a Dual 704, Sansui 217 and Mission speakers, my bank balance all went downhill from there |

I remember the Valdus 500 they were pretty decent for the money. For £100 they were pretty decent. No idea how they would fare these days. |

Well it's close on 50 years, and I purchased a Pioneer 112D tt, A & R 60 (can't remember if I had an amp before this one) and Celestion Ditton 33's, I'll join you on the embarassed bench, it was a long time ago and I can't recall all the details. I was at polytechnic and do remember I had a Pioneer PL12D TT with a Shure M75 cart I think. I bought an Akai GXC-50D cassette deck with the glass/ferrite heads. I lusted after some Quad II power amps that another student had but they were well out of the range of the budget. I don't remember what amp I had. Speakers were home brew in scrounged cabinets using Soundlab 6 1/2 inch dual cone from Stan Willets in West Bromwich. Lots of lusting through that shop window. Later on I had a Lecson AC1 preamp, very stylish design but it was an early one and suffered poor connections on the pcb.    |

Kenwood DP-930 CD Player JVC RX 305 receiver/amplifier Wharfedale Diamond 1 speakers 12(ish) years old, bought the lot for about £50.00 as I recall. Think my parents helped me out and called it a joint birthday/xmas present. I was in love with it as it knocked shades off anything my mates could muster. Bet it would still sound good today. Especially the inbuilt digital tuner and bass/treble controls on the receiver. Quality.    |

Back in the days when wheels were square and made of stone, my first amplifier was a 20 watter Hitachi thingy I acquired from a an old electronics shop in Cheltenham called GTV it was a non runner I paid the prinicely sum of £12 for it, that was around 2 months paper round money back in 1978 .
Took me 2 weeks to find and fix the fault, my uncle gave me a pair of his well used JR149 cylinder speakers I as used to call them, played with a Hitachi tape deck. For my CSE (how old  ) science project I built a 30 watt power house class a/b amplifier with the help of my teacher Mr. D (great bloke)
Then due to work/beer/rugby/women/bikes in no particular order the next time a purchase a 'proper hifi' was 1997 a pair of Krell 600 mono's Wilson Watt puppy 5:1's, a Wadia 270 and 27i transport and dac driving the Krell direct.
That was fun, but not music but it was the 90's and at that point I just could

Had an ITT music centre which actually had some pretty decent speakers with small full range drivers in when I was about 14, so 39 years ago. Got a pretty decent Akai stack system for my 18th, blew the amp up connecting two pairs of speakers to it about a year later so bought a NAD 3020, which was the real start of the slippery slope..

My first system was back in the mid 70's with a PL12D deck, a Rotel RA310 amplifier, with a pair of Wharfedale Lintons from Laskey's. Shortly after buying that I added an Akai 4000DS reel to reel deck and that was my first encounter with a crap dealer. Finished work on a Friday afternoon, picked up my wages and headed hot foot to get the 4000DS with a pocket full of cash. Bear in mind I was a tree surgeon back then and covered from head to toe in sawdust and black tree wound paint. The nob behind the counter looked me up and down and said very condescendingly "Sorry, we haven't got anything cheap in stock to suit your budget". so I slapped my big bundle of cash onto the counter and said "You get me a new 4000DS from the stock room, or take an ambulance ride, it's your choice". I was going to leave without buying, but watching this turd squirm so much made me change my mind.

My old man won 400 on the pools in late 60s, spent the lot of a b&o beomaster 1200 rg, tuner, deck and speakers in a lovely teak furniture case. That was the first real hifi I heard. It was still going strong when he passed away last year, only ever had new belts and cartridges. Not bad for a 55 year old germanium transistor hifi.

Then the bug bit....
Cherry red revolver with a QED amp and Spendor Preludes with socks in the ports.
If you haven't got foam port bungs and things are a bit boomy socks are wonderful things ....except for the stink obviously.
I could have washed them but they kept the cats off the bass cones. 🙂

1987, I had a £8k payout from a motorcycle accident, my wife at the time 'allowed' me to keep £1k of my money to get a system. After much research and annoying dealers I finally blew my wad at Freetime Audio, in Portsmouth.
I came home with:
Manticore Mantra in teak veneer with Moth (rebadged RB250) arm & A&R P77Mg, Rotel RB840BX2,Celestion DL6, Sennheisser SL414, a Target 3 shelf rack and speaker stands. Speaker cable was 1.5 T&E as it was all I could afford when buying the house and had had it pre-installed under the concrete floor whilst the builder was doing the refurb.

Had an Amstrad all in one in a squat in a tower block in Woolwich. Left there by the previous occupants but it did the job. 1/2 p on the cart headshell with blu tack, I Sh#t you not, graphic equaliser (lol) all sliders turned up full and tuner. Gave me sounds though. We were on the 16th floor and the balcony overlooked the docklands before it was all built up. When Jean Michelle Jarre had his gig there we had a party ,listening to the gig on the radio live and watching the lightshow from the balcony.
Then I got a NAD 3020e , wharfdale speakers and a NAD plastic turntable and the rot set in ☺

Blimey..I moved jobs around 83/84 ( it’s all a blur)
Took my pension money out and blew it on my first proper hifi
Turns out it was a good call as I more than made up the pension in later years and the system really got me back into music.
Roksan Xerxes with a rega arm and Elys. Ion Obelix 3x xpac and a pair of Royd Eden’s.
The amp packed in a few years ago but still have the deck and speakers in the attic. Mind you the Royds have been in several kitchens and been painted to match each time.
