Guys, hello! I'd like to do a little market research. We are in the middle of producing our own hand made solid wood plinths. But I'd like a little feedback so I wondered if you could answer three questions which would help us out!
1. What wood would like a plinth to be made from? 2. What price would for a hand built plinth should be? 3. What price would you pay for a plinth kit?
Thanks in advance

Hi . I bought a bare baltic birch plinth from Lithuania inc postage for £125
Size: 405 x 350 x 115 mm (+ - 2 mm) Weight: approx. 8 kg
This only allows for the L75 arm or something similar with original top plate though.
I guess if you could do something similar for £150ish that would be good.
Or if a kit with other woods or ply? Panzerholz or similar kit?
Or something kit wise for the PTP 5/6 with recessed grooves for the plates precut would be useful I think. Not sure about price that depends on the wood and finish on offer I think.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. The options and price of plinths is well documented. I just wanted to find out if people thought the current prices seemed fair and if we could improve on them. Thanks for your input.

Hmm. Not easy questions to answer to be honest as so many different ways to skin a cat!! What is going onto/into the plinth determines what can be used. If you are going down the Lenco route then I agree with the above. Doesn't have to be solid so an Oak carcass with an MDF filler works using sand in the voids? I remember years ago a guy built one out of metal and filled the voids with bentonite/resin mix and reported on graet results - labour intensive but the parts are not expensive Up to £300 would be acceptable dependant on what you used (and the size)

Well generally I think you get what you pay for. The more complex they are in terms of engineering and the fancier the finish probably governs the price after taking into account cost of materials. Depends how much profit you want to make!

Thanks guys. I initially will be starting making Thorens plinths and then I fancy having a go at the Goldring Lenco heavy sprung plinths but making them from solid wood. I'll then probably start doing skeletal Permali offerings for Garrards and PTP's.

I agree that you get what you pay for, so options would be a good idea.
Lower budget, could be mdf based with vaneer options.
Mid point, oak and other woods, upper end is going to be Panzerholz I'd guess.

There is a lot of cheap stuff out there already with Eastern Europe throwing out concrete, birch ply and MDF plinths for very little money. The concrete one is a ridiculous idea BTW. Panzerholz plinths are expensive now. There is no UK importer and the company in Germany won't deal with the public, only timber merchants. That coupled with our new import taxes on stuff from the continent make it a luxury item now, and personally i am glad i got one before this happened. I don't think people fully appreciate how fundamentally important a plinth is either. There is a lot of visually nice plinths out there, but when you look at the materials they are made from, i am convinced it's just eye candy aspect that is selling them. I saw one very recently that is made by a well known name, and it was languishing in the corner of this guy's room. sagged in the middle and now totally useless. so to your questions: 1. What wood would like a plinth to be made from? - Panzer is the king of plinths, i won't entertain anything else. 2. What price should a hand built plinth be? - Depends largely on the finish. If it's Panzer, basic but tidy, i'd pay £200-300. If it's finished like karma67 did his, i'd be getting my Blankety Blank cheque pen & book out! It's a no compromise material and finish. Ask what you like. I'd buy one. If it's made of anything else, i sincerely think the better it looks, the better you will do. Most people dont care what it's made of. 3. What price would you pay for a plinth kit? again, depends on what you do. With so many cheap offerings about, you may be better advised to go for luxury looking plinths. Make the Lenco SEXY.... Probably all useless info but i had 5 minutes spare. EDIT: From a selling POV, I also think the more exotic woods look fantastic. look at the finish on this guitar: reverb.com/uk/item/38489683-froggy-bottom-h-14-deluxe-cocobolo-acoustic-guitar-2007-cocobolo?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=1726164661&utm_content=campaignid=1726164661_adgroupid=70264195649_productpartitionid=822029441456=merchantid=240301346_productid=38489683_keyword=_device=t_adposition=_matchtype=_creative=391637461803&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIspjZnv6i8AIV3QWiAx0wZQygEAQYAiABEgJS4PD_BwEA Plinth like that would loosen wallets everywhere

Sorry to veer off topic whilst still on subject. I’m lucky enough to have a panzerholz plinth for my SP10. Am just a few weeks off freedom from shielding the missus and one of my first ports of call after a years house arrest will be to a veneer company near us. The guy does dashboards for old jags and mg’s.. and all sorts of other stuff. Now I don’t know what he will charge.. and to be honest I don’t really care. If the end result is top quality I’ll find the dosh from somewhere www.gdkveneering.co.uk/

I'm getting some great feedback from what people want and it's helping to formulate what I will eventually offer.

Great advice, and again, thanks very much for your input. I'll hopefully have an option list for plinths in the new future, currently I'm in the market research phase!

With a little bit of DIY, you can make a plinth for very little. I have just completed a plinth for mu SP10 & it cost around $40. I used some Rimu board I already owned & I bought two sink bench cutouts from a local kitchen bench manufacturer for $10 eack. I also made an rm pod from the off cuts. Dearest item was the high strength construction glue. Attachments:

Hi, Yes that is a SP15 and one of my arms. Cheers Erm, hello? You make your own tonearm? I expect a thread (with all the details) to appear in the Analogue section of the forum, by sundown! No, in all seriousness, we have a lot more readers here than members. I am sure they would love to read about your Tonearm, as would i
