>So it there are gaps in the samples, why aren't there gaps in the waveform?
It's the mathematics of Fourier transforms and sine wave reconstruction. Sorry, but I don't think there is a proper non mathematical answer.
It's based on the idea that is approachable, though, that an analogue sine wave can be precisely reconstructed by sampling just two points within a single cycle.
Also, any complex waveform can be completely represented by the sum of a number of sine waves.
Put those two things together and you can start to get the idea that a limited number of samples can fully represent a complex waveform like music.

So, Oli, now you've seen "macca's video" are you now more comfortable that digital sampling doesn't actually lose any information? There are no musical information losses between the samples. There is only 1 mathematical solution to digital conversion and that is the correct one. Analogue in = digital out

Jerry, can I ask how your R2R DAC compares with previous DACs you have heard. Is the presentation different?
Might be difficult one to answer as I know you've had quite a few DACS!

Might be difficult one to answer as I know you've had quite a few DACS! Hi Jimbo I'm really happy still with the MyST R2R DAC. I wouldn't want to swap back to any other DAC I've had that I can think of. I only recently realised that I've had a R2R DAC before but wasn't even aware of the DAC tech at the time. That was a Metrum Mini DAC. Tbh it didn't make that great an impression. I'm certainly enjoying the MyST a lot more with no thought of moving it on. So I guess I have to conclude that R2R in itself is not a magic bullet, and a lot depends on the implementation.

Thanks Jerry, the DACs you have mentioned look a reasonable price too. I have a feeling we are going to see a lot more of these R2R Dac designs coming onto the market shortly.

Three and a half grand though.

there's already shedloads of them, it's not a new thing. Don't seem to be many at a reasonable price though.

Martin
Sure you can find one used somewhere? they also demonstrate a great response to upgrades.
Also Metrum are no longer trading, however the owner has started another company since.

Aye probably but would still be a lot more than I'd be prepared to pay for a DAC though. Plus I only bought a new one a few months back.

Problem with DACS is whatever is flavour of the month is usually bettered in a very short period of time bit like what happened with digital photography.
I would say the life span of a DACs cutting edge is probably 6 months.

That's pretty much on the money if you base your buying decisions on the opinions of others.
