As an interested reader in DCB1 pre-amp, this review (sorry! it's on 6 Moons!) will interest some? THe old TVC was highly rated and this seems a great alternative.

The Slagle autoformers are very good imo, I built a pre with a set a while back.

It was good. I reckon a DCB1 is better though. But have found controlling the volume digitally in the DAC to be better again, although that could be system dependant I suppose.

Always fancied a listen to one but then i went down the unity gain route and havent looked back. maccaThe DCB1 you have is a good unit, but the ones we built later were better. the Turbo 1.2A builds were as good as they got, however, the Neurochrome 8x2 was better and then better again with the LPSU and the Biscuit tin (BT2)has wiped the floor with all of them. Using the Soekris as a preamp has given things a bit of an edge, but other than losing a bit of dimensional imaging, it hasnt done much wrong. I am not at all surprised the Digital VC on your DAC has beaten your DCB1 |

So I'll have to be the one who slogs through and gives a precis? WEll, Mr Golden ears (Srajan) rates the Slagle box. He had a specially formulated one. It seems that you can get a Custom one built with choice of inputs, etc., even a built-in X-Over. The added atraction is the remote control and readout, plus it can be programmed later if needed. Buy one, Jerry? Once I decide on just HOW I want my set-up to be, I might; assuming I don't get a DAC/Pre instead. AS it is, I'm still using my modded Hafler DH101, which I liked as much as the Stereo Coffee I had. But remote control would be nice. Listening to a split USB cable as i type-new acquisition.

Sorry, I did attempt the 6 Moons but only got halfway up the south face. I don't mind a waffling review if it is entertaining but that just wasn't. Reads like he was drunk when he wrote it. Or parts of it. I don't pay any attention to a reviewer who thinks they need all the mains conditioners, power cables, isolation feet under the streamer and all that stuff. For me that means they go straight in the 'Doesn't have a clue' list so there's not much point reading their review. |

Don't read Jeff Day then! (RE conditioners etc..) I guesss it's how you get when you try things and hear an improvement, then another,....etc.over time. It's best to read first page then last, of 6 Moons, to get the gist of things. I read through it, mainly because I needed to understand the Pre-amps process.
I like the KISS philosophy,personally, so a MHDT dac for example.16 bit, no filter. |
