SO, my setup is out of alignment by about 1mm at the inner groove section of the setup protractor, so inner grove distortion i'd accept and yes, it does get worse nearer the the inner grove so that all makes sense.
I have cleaned the stylus with my brush, and it's better again, so looks like i need to get some decent stylus cleaner and give it a thorough clean.
any suggestions?

Can you hear a difference between these two files? File 1File 2
These were done with a different set up. Public disclaimer: No Houdinis were harmed (or used) in the making of these files. Bugger. They are not volume matched. One is MM and one is MC, and I think that the difference in gain can be clearly heard in the volume level, as I did not change anything else.

Had to adjust levels, but File 1 sounds more dynamic to me with better impact and decay, but a bit fatter tonally. The HF in File2 sounded a bit recessed. I owuld prefer to listen to File 1

I owuld prefer to listen to File 1 The good thing is that you can hear a difference. It is in preparation for my Houdini needle drops, although it may be unfair, as I need to check the bit rate of file 2. It may not be the same. If it is not, I will redo file 2.

Oliver, if your cart is off at the spindle side of the protractor, focus on getting it set it up so its spot on and aligned at the spindle side. The grooves are more tightly packed at this end of the side, and the relative m/s speed is faster there. Its more difficult to track. This is where all records will be more worn. Use an alignment that has the inner null point closer to the spindle, din standard is 60.325mm for the end of the side. Some alignments have lower average distortion over the whole disc, but they have higher distortion on the inner grooves. Which to me is a bad thing as this is always where the disc sounds its worst. The 'audiophile' alignments that have null points set at 75mm ect are to me as much use as a chocolate fireguard for most records. Clean the stylus with a bit of vodka. Works well for me

As i have been suffering from a bit of sibilance lately, i thought a bit of a cleaning and care section for your treasured diamonds might be an idea. Also i think we have overtaken @cageyh 's Houdini thread. So i have/will move the related threads here.

What i do is to use vodka. To deliver it, i cut a cube of magic eraser sponge, put it in a beer bottle cap, pour the vodka onto the sponge, enough so that it saturates the cube and there is abit in the bottle cap. Drop the stylus into it using the arm lift for a short while and lift it out. The vodka wont attack the epoxy holding the stylus on, and wont wick up the cantilever because it sits on the surface of the sponge not in it. But the stylus will sit in the sponge and thus in the vodka. Could also use record cleaning fluid, same idea.
