An image of one of our designs power supply being thoroughly tested for CE emissions before any work commences. Looking at the incoming mains noise and how much conducted noise is being transferred to the PSU and the end result we are looking at CISPER 16 standards for DC output ripple and harmonic noise via a real time analyzer and DC LISN.
Here was are looking into the jitter spectra, trend RJ/DJ and histogram of a Mutec MC3 clock with our superb LeCroy Wavepro 254 12 bit scope with a Rigol MSO8000 providing damn fine conformation of the results
Here is one of our new QP-1 ultra quiet power supply being measured with a 1 amp dynamic load applied to the DUT (device under test) as you can see it clearly show dc line ripple noise below 18uv which is quite decent given its actually being measured with a genuinely working load applied! To put this into perspective our Keysight E36313A industry standard has a ripple noise of 'only' 350uv
Some more of the instruments we have in the Lab, A 2Ghz 500Mpts MSO Oscilloscope, 150Mhz Function generator, 6.6Ghz Real time spectrum analyzer, Vector network analyzer

I am actually putting a Belcanto CD2 back together in between editing images who said guys cannot multi task Recently we have invested in a full JBC soldering suite, from hot air plates, vacuum de-soldering guns, precision tweeters for all SMT work, hot air rework station, foot pedal control and a significant number of high quality tips. Also recently arrived a Microtest 30Mhz precision impedance analyzer and LCR meter with Kelvin tweeters and various fixtures plus our latest acquisition a rather nifty DC power analyzer mainframe from Keysight , a dc power supply, DC load, scope and data logger all in one box plus its rather accurate down to +/-8ua, still haven't plugged it in yet We have invested significantly in test equipment in the last 18 months and now have what we feel is a well appointed electronics lab Will post some images of the new test toys later, I really must finish this CD player chaps

Morning Chaps Thought I would update some of the images so I took some more photo's last night. Some of the other test equipment gracing our lab. Here we have our JBC soldering suite which can handle just about any soldering issue that may arise Here we are testing a new regulator design with the DC power analyzer which is both a power supply, dc load, sink and data logger very useful piece of equipment for characterizing power supplies. Lastly demonstration of an ultra clean linear audio dc power supply happily delivering a solid 2 amps @ 12Vdc through a dynamic dc load.

Thank you Oli, Early on we realized that if you are to get to grips with true audio fidelity you need to look at all aspects of the circuitry and beyond 20Khz Looking outside of the box is very important to designing equipment, however your ears are as important as the theory and design, modelling and creation of new ideas. We are constantly improving our facilities all the time, however what a lot of people misunderstand is that supporting cast to the measurement instruments themselves are just as important as say the scope itself, in the same way cables/supports and mains equipment is to audio. With RF testing you need attenuates, loads, RF probes, RF amplifiers, RF current probes, antenna, correct test cabling we use 18Ghz T-Flex 405 damn good stuff as some of the big BW stuff costs way in excess of the audio high end cable sector Factor mixers and shunts etc and it gets £££. For example a quality 1ma resolution 50 amp 100Mhz probe for the scope is £7K on its own, if you are looking at low level power in densely pack boards then a optically isolated high BW probe is required so no change for £8K for that one. Tektronix produce an optiview probe which is a basic £24K no tips lol The supporting equipment for confident precision measurements can and do equate to almost the cost of the test equipment itself Anyway we have the ability to cope with pretty much any job you could mention.

This week due the complexity of of designing SMPS (Non audio versions!) and keeping the the liner power supplies as quiet as humanly possible. This week have taken delivery of a lovely very low noise 12 bit LeCroy scope for low level power rail and mains measurements along with some useful voltage and current probes so this enables us to really dig deep into the heart of the audio and look at those circuit board induced noise without having to spend all day setting up TDR kit. Proving a great tool in the arsenal for reducing both mains and dc noise in electronic circuits in general.

Certainly some quality looking gear there, and probably the cutest little Snap-On tool box I have ever seen.

Here are the mini Snap on boxes in there own right, they were a gift from my snap on dealer in 1997 as a thank you for purchasing a larger brother storage system.
They are very useful for probe tips, extensions, probe adapters BNC adapters. The other boxes hold soldering accessories, the last one holds all of the pen drives for the test equipment software.
Plus they do draw attention from visitors to the lab with comments similar to yours Cageyh

Well the last few weeks have been incredibly busy with upgrades, repairs and new sales not had much time to get to grips with a few projects I have been working on. Also we have been updating the electronics lab and expanding the research space we have. This week we have taken delivery of some interesting new additions to the audio side of electronics business, a Rhode & Schwarz UPV66 audio analyzer with full full sweet of audio analysis capabilities. The same model that Hifi World use only ours uses a separate monitor screen, just getting to grips with this as it sports different features than my Standford Research SR785 More on this in coming weeks, as now we can look into the other side of audio measurements for any correlations after 20Khz and spurious noise well above this threshold.

Recently we have seen some very nice quality pre-amplifiers in our lab for inspection, upgrades and servicing. A rather nice example of a Plinius Tautoro with damn fine channel separation and balance within 3mv Underrated pre amp in my book This week a real blast from the past and one piece of audio equipment I have always had a soft spot for Hovland, having own these great pieces in the past it was great to see a really well cared for example of a HP100 pre amplifier a wonderfully musical device In for a check over and service.

Simon
I would characterize the casework and application of components around it as interesting and unconventional, however they did engineer in a back door ability to gain access to to the circuit boards with having to un-solder around 60+ connections.
This particular model is working as it should and still sounds engaging and incredibly listenable. Having own a few Hovland models over the year I found them be worthy of a shelf of my personal system, not many brands obtain that ability.

You've got a ton of stuff in there MisterC I see you've had in a Nagra intergrated, now I've never actually had a home dem of Nagra, but heard them at many shows; I don't know why, they sound pleasant enough, but that's it, no emotion/feeling comes through for me, the last time was with a rather large YG speaker (Sonja?), also there was a 'smaller system' Boulder intergrated and YG Carmels, well for myself and my brother this smaller system had everything, pace, vitality, feeling, in fact we thought it to be the best sound at the show Should have added, I'm pretty sure you are not a fan of YG speakers Tony, as always each to his own and I fully understand that, although I will say the American distributor is a big fan of YG paired with, you've guessed it, Audionet

Hello Antonio
When you progress further up the audio ladder the more you realise that certain brands offer a real synergy that you may not of thought of or even considered. Yet the window of opportunity to find suitable pairing equipment narrows significantly imho
Nagra has a sound that many feel is one of the best available I have listened to many Nagra systems for myself it's very good vanillia with a hint of warmth. For a lot of listeners this is their sonic Nivarnia. The great premise of audio is the subjectivity.
YG's and pairing again like magicos love em or hate really and truly only work well with three amplifier brands.
I will qualify this, many amplifiers are capable of driving YG's without fuss or any headroom issues what so ever.
My thoughts are simply delivering a perfect synergy between amplifier and speakers
Having owned one or two pairs of YG's i have tried many quality amplifier brands with them and finding a happy balance isn't easy imho
The absolute rock bottom sound quality was heard via a pair of Carmel II's big Moon monos a full loom of Nordost Odin II and a full Dcs Vivaldi stack
Now Moon is as far away from bright as you get, but this set up rivaled a Naim full tractor engine system and GU MK III's it was painful at best
As with all quality audio component matching is just so important
