Common saying 'hard work never killed anyone', but how sure are you the saying is true. I have heard a few stories that would make me disagree with that statement.

I'd be surprised if they gave a single solitary F#ck. Wear an expensive watch (or a good fake one) and let people see it all casual like. You'd be amazed at how it impresses the rubes.

It wouldn't impress me much. Nothing does, really. Nor do anyone else's possessions make me jealous or envious. Good luck to 'em, I say.

I have never really been bothered either. I think because I had a couple of friends when I was a nipper whose families were pretty wealthy, so they got all the latest gadgets and toys, went on multiple foreign holidays, lived in a big house and so on. Got used to the idea that life is just like that when I was young I suppose. But it helps if you are happy in your low income rut, which I am.

I used to collect Breitling watches. Loads of times I’ve worn one and someone’s noticed. You get treated with a high degree of deference. I never wear a shirt and tie let alone a suit. I don’t drive ether, so usually no sign of wealth or status. Stick an expensive watch on and suddenly I’m a VIP. Daft but it happens.

Got used to the idea that life is just like that when I was young I suppose. But it helps if you are happy in your low income rut, which I am. All my childhood friends were poor (there were some rich kids, but I didn't know them). When I went to university I befriended a few rich people, and back then, the idea was to pretend to be poor because being rich was naff, so none of them boasted about their family's wealth. I guess you could say I'm 'comfortably off' now rather than actually rich (large house, two hifis, holidays whenever I want), but I was just as happy when I was on the dole and had almost no possessions (man). It was tough for a few years when the girls were little and the mortgage rate seemed to go up every week, but we struggled through OK.

Spending keeps the world going round. 'The world is too much with us; late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;— Little we see in Nature that is ours; We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!' William Wordsworth, 'The World Is Too Much With Us' (1807)

For years I never had a cashpoint card so I'd go in the bank once a month and cash a cheque. I started a job where I had to wear a suit and tie and look very smart, obviously accompanied by flash watch, expensive haircut etc. I'd go in the bank to get my monthly cash and the difference in the way I was treated was quite startling. Living most of my life in rough areas I soon found out that dressing smart or wearing the sort of clothes your mother might pick for you made you a target for local urchins. So I started dressing like a chav. No more aggravation. After all, you don't see piranhas eating each other.

Keep rubbing their bastard noses in it Rudy!

She had to do everything for me for the first two weeks and then it's all the hospital visits. Still not out of the woods with the impending surgery so yes, definitely the right move. Nothing worse than the look on my boy's faces when I was lying in the road (was following them down the road) waiting for the ambo. The wife said "stick to hifi" lol.

You should get something really pointless and extravagant just so they don't have any doubts. Something like a big fountain in the middle of the lawn, little brass boy on top pissing the water out. You know the sort of thing I mean. That way they would know you have money to burn. Pay cash for it ofc.
