I found a dual motor in a box the other day. id bought it and promptly forgot about it. I also completely ignored everyone who suggested getting a mission 774 (original) when I asked for recommendations on a new arm to buy, and promptly bought an airprodigy linear tracking arm instead. The arm is being built for me at the moment so i don't have it yet. but i'm rather excited to try it. The power supply and controls are going in a separate box as the dual is supposed to be one of the quietest motors it's possible to get hold of, so why spoil it by having a transformer in the plinth with it. This is where we are up to so far Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr the missus says it looks like an eye.... Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr the veneer is oak, the plinth is made up of layers of mdf (top and bottom) high density chipboard and ply to get a nice dead structure. same as usual for me Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr the trim ring is mdf too and will be painted, probably matte black. and will be a pig to get a decent finish on, but hey ho... Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr The arm will be on a board in the cutout area, no through hole at the moment because the arm doesn't need one. I could however, fit a 12" arm on the plinth as i made it big enough, so would put a through hole in it at that point. it would support anything from a rega pattern upwards, not a linn pattern though they are too short. quite why i'd want to is another matter, my time with my friend nigels terminator arm on my jbe tells me the airprodigy is not likely to be taken off.... next job will be to machine an arm board out of a lump of afromosia timber, the put together a box for the psu. to be continued

Looking very nice Ant. Using the DD motor unit in that plinth with the air arm should be a good combo

Got a bit more done Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr Trim has been painted satin black, I have an idea for another trim piece, haven't made it yet as I haven't got any pieces of sheet material big enough hanging around, but I have an idea for another trim piece that follows a cue from the plinth itsself. I'll make another one when I can get some more materials in. Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr I've treated the oak with some teak oil just to darken it a bit and pull the grain out, I haven't used a finishing wax on it this time as I kinda like the matte finish that the straight teak oil has given on the veneer. It seems to fit with the satin black finish on the trim Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr The multipin plug and socket arrived today, nice and chunky, I picked this one because it has a mounting flange rather than a nut, its neater to use as it screws straight on rather than faffing about making a plate for it Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr Managed to get a really nice finish on the current trim piece which I was surprised at, really its been too hot to spray properly today, i was expecting the paint to craze, but the primer actually took really well. Also polished the platter up. another job ticked off the list. shame its still stood on its spray can lid legs, hopefully the real ones will show up soon.....

Arm board is done, nice and simple. The rebate it sits in is 18mm deep and the hardwood base layer of the board is 20mm. The acrylic top surface is 3mm to give a 5mm height over the main plinth, based on the dimensions of the arm. Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr I'm trying to keep a clean, unfussy look to the build and keep an 'overall' look rather than having details that stick out. We'll see wether that works when the arm is on it Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr

got the psu done today, so the deck itsself is complete apart from some minor things. I hadn't got any oak left for a case, and the only stuff I did have with a similar tone to the oak was an offcut of olivewood left over from a chassis build i did for martin. not enough for a full case, so I bought cheap case of ebay to cannibalise Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr The case was only 13 quid, not shown is a nasty bit of ally for the front, but that was not a problem as I didn't intend using it anyway. Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr I cut and shaped the olivewood to replace the front and back, and the brackets as it sits inside the 2 parts of the case, like this. Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr abit of paint, some cutting, filing and bleeding, and we have a psu case Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr as you can see, the original adjustment knobs are too small so they will get changed for some new ones, and i had to bodge a part of the original bracketry to use to select 33 or 45 rpm, because i haven't got a control knob that will fit on the very short shaft of the original switch. i might just turn up a set of matching controls for it as the adjustment pot shafts are 4mm anyway. then it should look ok. It doesn't quite match the deck, but it works perfectly and it'll be tucked out of the way anyway so it doesn't matter too much. the deck is the bit to look at anyway. Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr need to re polish the platter again though.... cant wait for the arm to be finished. onwards!

Fabulous job on the psu case Ant. Loving that olivewood.
The beauty of wood is that mixing and matching gives more appreciation IMO.

sorted out the control knobs on the psu box, nice and simple. After abit of thought, I just sleeved up the 4mm shaft pots with some air line tubing to make them 6mm and some normal control knobs fitted perfectly. no need to make any. Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr I also bought another 5mm neoprene platter mat for it to replace the dual one. the same one I use on my jvc QL-Y5F and on my 75/88 lenco, my jbe also has individual circles of the same material on each of its platter pods, replacing the original blown sorbothane pads. the middle control does need modifying though, the setscrew doesn't grab the switch shaft properly as its too far up the body of the control knob. I'll have to drill and tap a new hole closer to the base of it so it'll secure properly, but predictably, i dont have a 3mm tap that will actually tap....... The one last job... Maybe...

the deck itsself is now finished Eds1000 airprodigy build by anthony cresswell, on Flickr the neoprene platter mat arrived, and the control knobs have been tweaked again so they are all bang on in line (it was still slightly out and getting on my nerves) And the centre control knob drilled and tapped so that it fits properly. ive had it running for a couple of hours and had no need to tweak the speed so id call it a success. an ear to the plinth while its running reveals no sound at all from the motor that my ear'oles can detect. shouldn't be long before the arm arrives ive been using the jbe strobe disc to watch the speed, could do with another 2 so that this deck and the big lenco have one too. shall have to look at whats available

just as an aside from the EDS direct drive deck, thought people might like to see the other deck i build myself during lockdown Bte designs TYPE 3 lenco, gst-1, vm540ml by anthony cresswell, on Flickr it was a very nasty gl75, the last one i had in the house. its now got a goldring eroica lx on it rather than the vm540ml as i had to give that back to its owner. i get bored very easily, so i make things...

My type 1 is a straight restoration of a lenco, new plinth and mechanical overhaul to put it back to original spec My Type 2 is the teardrop shaped one that Dave bought off me And my type 3 is a conversion of a lenco to a motor unit so you can fit whatever arm you like and retain the look of it still being a lenco

Can’t wait to read what your review of the finished product. I have a boxed Dual CS701 that I had planned to rob the motor to build a deck for the 2nd system. I bought it from Montesque. That was before it dawned on me that despite wanting retirement projects, my skills were never going to match what I thought I could actually do. Reinforced by seeing what someone with real skills can do! I’ll probs give it to my daughter when she moves house.

You'll not get a review of it, I'll either say I like it or don't like it I dont like to wax lyrical about audio, one man's great is another man's poor so my opinion is largely irrelevant as my standards of what is good or bad are different to anyone elses And its a one off so it's not as if someone could go out and buy one... Anything I'll write I'll qualify that it's my opinion only
