At the moment I can play music from an external HD using my Lenovo ThinkPad using a Topping D30.
My question, is there a better way or device that would give me better sound quality than using the Lenovo for a budget of £200.

I could be Alan, can I'll google it.
Can you tell me how it is controlled, I only need to use an external hd, no streaming needed?

It's controlled via Ethernet and your router, using Volumio on a tablet/PC or phone.

Thanks Alan, this would be to take with me when I go to Cambodia. I do not want anything relying on the internet, just something to get the music off an hd, preferably not my laptop. Guess I'll have to give it a miss but thank you.

I wanted exactly what you are looking for but it seems everything is internet based these days.

Looking at an Asus Tinkerboard or S version with aluminium case. Hoping I can control it with an Amazon Fire tablet. Of course you get the internet in Cambodia, but at times it can run slow or even cut out.

You could use a PI with a touch screen (I have one on mine - 7inch) then no Internet or network required. Just have to knock up an enclosure.

What size hdd?
A DAP ( Digital Audio Player ) might do or even a smartphone and a few decent size mSD card, my old Motorola X Play smartphone is a great music player, beat my Fiio dap and even my iPad Pro hands down for audio quality.

I have been using a Astell & Kern jr, but was looking for something a little better. I have more music on the hd, and for some reason the A&K stopped reading the sd card, even though I didn't use the largest capacity one or even over fill it.

The PI screws to the back of the screen If you look at my blog you should see a pic of it on my HiFi rack. Connects to the PI via the DIS connection so no need for seperate power etc and the orientation can also be adjusted (portrait, landscape) so pretty good.

You can do this with my laptop and you don't need any internet.
