Hi I’m looking for a try before I buy MM Valve Phone Stage to Demo before I commit to buy around the £300 -£400 mark no DIY I’m useless.
Or if any kind member has a decent one laying around that I could borrow to get sense of what one would sound like in my system I’d be very, very grateful.
Alternatively if the seller would agree to refund me if the stage didn't fit in my set up of course there would be a limit and I couldn't expect to return it after months. I use my system everyday so I'd know if it was a keeper after just a few weeks.

I had the project one. It didn't match ther solid state one of comparable price in any capacity . It'll be hard to top SS for a phone stage I reckon.

Thanks for the heads up. I have arranged to demo a Ming Da 747 that’s been modded by Mark at Ming Da. The 747 was produced before his tenure at Ming Da started he has tidied up the circuit in attempt to cure an inherent lack of bass which according to the owner he has he has also added a couple of SUT’s to improve the MC input.

Do report back on your experience with it. I like the Ming Da lineup, especially when it's been fixed. Had a Ming Da valve amplifier here for a little bit but that had to under go hefty changes too. I think it's the same fella who did that.

Of course, I will report back ASAP. I spoke to the owner today and after a final check it will be sent out after the Easter Holidays. Thanks for the heads up. Are you sure about that? Last I head Mark Manwaring-White was Mr MingDa and David Shaw was Mr Icon Audio. I spoke with Mark a week or two ago, not that that says anything :-)

Perhaps I've misinterpreted what I've read on other forums where this amp was listed and confused who is who but this amp was moddified back at Ming Da by someone could be either of the gentleman mentioned above I'll find out for sure and ammend the above post accordingly.

Right confusion on my part regarding who carried out the mods it was actually Mark at Ming Da someone then added down thread that David Shaw was appointed to Ming Da and somehow in my lockdown addled brain the two posts became entwined. Sorry for the confusion.

Of course these things are always system dependant hence my eagerness to try before I buy. My current stage tht V LPS is going to be very, very hard to beat in it's price range and nigh on impossible with a valve one of the same price but I have gone up to about 3 times the cost which is hopefully enough. I'm happy to stay with the V LPS it's just that I've always wanted to try a valve one.

You could try and EAR 834 clone. They do come up from time to time on Lenco Heaven or even eBay, I'd like send it to Dave @ Firebottle for checking over and modding. It might cost a little more then your budget but you'd get a decent MM valve amp that you could easily sell again.

Lockdown getting to you Andy? Alan @ Firebottle Yeah a bit! I'm happiest wading through 20 patients a day in the Podiatry clinics. I've been seeing some patients but only working very very restricted lists, only high risk patients. So, the audio hobby has taken over, I've been researching record labels, looking at how I can tweak to systems. Can you do me a favour?? Can you send me a PM explaining how you hook up the volume control jobbie that you've been playing with.

It's just a standard preamp Andy. 3 sets of inputs and one output, couldn't be simpler. I'm sure you will have no trouble.

I've been offered a couple of EAR834 Clones that look very interesting. I'm going to try this modified Ming Da first and if that suits than perhaps just a volume pot in a box.

Be careful if you decided to go down the 834 clone route. Not all clones are created equally. It's always worthwhile finding out which PCB and PSU have been used.

I want to bypass the pre amp section of my Nad c372 by going straight into the main in, I need one input for my phono amp and one for my DAC. Something very simple would be nice.

I think it's the same fella who did that. Hi. Do you not mean the 767? I think the 747's a passenger aircraft. There were two versions of the 767. The original was blingy chrome & gold affair and the later version was black. The original had an inherent design fault resulting in noticeable bass loss. Someone measured their's and found it to be either 6 or 9 dB down at 20Hz, I think. This was traced to the first valve not being operated correctly, as far as I can remember. Some tried mods - with no effect, as the inherent fault wasn't addressed. Some others just used the chassis, transformer and valves to build an alternative design. I got one from Emporium Hi Fi some years ago for £90 as someone had tried to modify it. Never got round to doing anything with it. www.google.com/search?q=mm+mingda+mc+767+rd&safe=strict&client=ms-android-cubot&prmd=minv&sxsrf=ALeKk023iF3kwC2lWzQYeazYk_zFLHwnIw:1586959967634&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjY15LJzuroAhWRiFwKHf0zCUYQ_AUoAnoECAwQAg&biw=360&bih=560#imgrc=xP11jlsiNK_f_MDon't know if the later black version corrected the issue.

Well Hello Batman! I dont mean either, as I was quoting someone else but yes, you're quite right about the bass issues. It was documented elsewhere IIRC However, the MingDa Piccolo (?) I had here was a pretty good listen, if not a little...... rustic....in its delivery.

Yes It's a 767 Mk 1 and it was returned to Ming Da and moddified by Mark there to a new design of his own that is supposed to cure the lack of bass and improve the MC input too. I have it on demo so if it isn't up to scratch I can send it back but thanks for the info. I have to say though that anyone who buys any item at all hifi or otherwise who doesn't research it fully and completely investigate it via google is a bit silly and silly I'm not.

An online dictionary gives the two following definitions of what rustic means. 1. relating to the countryside; rural. 2. made in a plain and simple fashion. I'm hoping it's the latter which in my limited experience is usually a good thing when it comes to amplification other wise I'm waiting for a phono stage that sounds like a tractor.

A bit like riding in a tractor, as opposed to a limousine. Rough around the edges. Enjoyable, but certainly not in the same league as the Krell, Neurochrome etc BTW, I'm not suggesting the Phonostage is the same, just relaying what I thought of the Piccolo I did like it though. That must not be ignored
