I wrote quite a lot of reviews for Hifi Pig webzine in its first couple of years, with my style being described by one manufacturer / forum owner as Ken Kessler-lite. He meant it as an insult, but I took it as a compliment!
I always tried to describe both pros and cons, with very few products getting away without being compared to its disadvantage with something else or the 'absolute sound' of real music, or describing the improvements available if you spent more on a better item.
But there's no point in doing things if you don't have a bit of fun. That's partly where the 'flowery language' comes in - you need words and phrases to describe what you hear, and anything beyond everyday vocabulary is open to comment and derision. But imo you do need your sense of humour turned on when reading these things - too many folks seem to turn deadly serious. The writers are often just a bit tongue in cheek, I'm sure, with their lifting veils etc, and whilst it does convey the desired meaning well, it should also be regarded with a smile rather than a scowl.

They do tend to make you sceptical? Bought a copy of HiFi World a couple of weeks ago. Apart from one review the were all 'Outstanding one of the best.' Then you read the reviews and the text rarely matched the summary. The other one that bugs me is 'Editors Choice,' in HiFi News.' Usually seems to mean the Reviewer has panned it and the Editor has decided it wasn't a good idea?

I used to get Hi-fi World every month. had to go up town for it to WH Smith. Then the corner shop started doing papers and magazines so I asked the bloke if he would get it in for me.
Went in one time and he was sat behind the counter reading it. He said to me 'I don't understand a word of it.'
I used to like Noel Keywood's speaker reviews as if there was a flaw he was not shy about pointing it out. Up until about 2010 it to be a good couple of hours of reading.
But then they got a load of really boring reviewers in, plus there were pages wasted reviewing stuff like mains blocks and mains cables, streamers, all the stuff I have zero interest in. It would take me 10 minutes to read the stuff that interested me, so not worth the money anymore.

He loved Tangent RS4's (so did I), Bose 901's and of course he did get great sounds in his split level room with is active Isobariks, even before he went all solid core and modified his three Krell KSA 50's. Last time I visited many years back sadly, we went to a small jazz gig in the nearby Barbican Foyer. I tried to get him to compare the very close and 'direct' sound at this little gig to the distant and amorphous sounds he was getting at home, but he wasn't having any of it. I left his place despondent and in any event, our lives diverged into ladies and marriage not long after and we eventually lost touch. I'm still very fond of the guy though - a real gent and fascinating to talk to (yep, someone who wouldn't always let me get a word in edgeways ) Last month's Hi-Fi World's issue seems to have come up with a solution. When it comes to saying what they feel and pleasing the manufacturer. Several reviews in the mag. and all but one review said 'Outstanding one of the best.' Reading the full reviews usually told a different story. One review was on a high end Rega cartridge 'Outstanding one of the best?' If I had been looking for a cartridge in that price range, wound'nt have gone near it after reading the full review. The only thing still puzzling me, is the one product that got a lukewarm summary. What did the maker do to p*** off the Reviewer so much?

Rega famously never advertised, ever. Their dealers might but rega never have
