To see where distortion lies over the frequency band and at what power levels which is clearer than a set of figures. On a speaker to gain an overall sense of tonal balance and dispersion (I know it doesn't tell the whole story), to help work out sub-woofer positioning in-room (the US is still heavily into home theatre) and maybe confirm bass modes in a typical listening environment, to see what ultrasonic muck comes out of a dac, especially a 'subjectively optimised' one - usually ill-designed ladder types, to see the errors in a vinyl system frequency response (cartridge vertical and lateral response differences) and the terrible distortions of a typical pickup cartridge at high frequencies... Apologies. MUSIC is by far the most important thing, but I'm getting a bit fed up with some audio companies putting their own sonic signature over every recording one plays - and given the chance, I play all kinds of stuff and annoy some of you lot in the relevant thread on a Sunday night when I have a couple of hours to myself on headphones...
Nothing to do with people changing user names though

I've read your post twice Dave and contemplated reading it thrice. But na fuk it..... Could you give me an example of sonic signature corruption.
If you mean remasters.....I'm with ya bro, never heard a remaster yet that improves upon the original.
Yon C#nt Steven Wilson can kiss me hoop...he made a right arse of Tull.
Discuss.

I think Dave is talking about equipment that adds its own character to whatever you play. Audionote for example.

Warmth and a bit of glitter on the top end.
Wasn't having a go at Audionote btw, all equipment adds something of its own to the sound, more or less. Audionote just seemed like a good example.

No of course not, I was genuinely interested given I’m keen on getting one of their amps. Thanks for the info.

The Only Wilson I know of is the one that makes those silly expensive speakers, and they absolutely suck.

I do listen to rock but it’s probably not in the majority. Then again it’s Floyd, Led Zep, Deep Purple etc so no death metal or the like regardless
