Why does the world's most iconic turntable stir up so much ridicule, disdain and scorn?

Probably because of the mega attention it gets. Don't forget the hype and marketing.

Why does the world's most iconic turntable stir up so much ridicule, disdain and scorn? 'Cos people keep going on about the bleedin' thing!

Some people treat Ivor T like a god. Sad indeed!

Some people treat Ivor T like a god. Sad indeed! S. It's strange, I agree. Apparently he's one of Engine's principal wanking fantasies. Thora Hird is the other one.

Shane's not wrong... A good old one IS good ime, but a bad 'un now with knackered main bearing is absolute shite! Until the mid 80's, no two were quite the same, but bit by bit the quality control of the plinths improved, the Cirkus kit plus sub-chassis updates transformed the colourations for the better and despite the silly-high prices, a current one IS a good record spinner.
Ivor didn't get along with everyone and some were hugely jealous of his success with what was basically a blue-printed Thorens 150 (a lot of parts were almost interchangeable). The early history of the deck is suspect as well as the first Ariston RD11's were so alike (the main bearing and switch were different it seems but everything else..... Not for me to say more here)
I now look at the various samples of different ages I set up still with renewed affection - and this has amazed me frankly as five or ten years ago, I grew to despise the effin' thing. I could write pages and pages about it, but none of you really want to know, so I'll shut me noise...

I thought the most Iconic turntable was an SL1200.

I thought the most Iconic turntable was an SL1200. Garrard 401 was 'iconic' (hate that word) before the Techie was invented.

Yes, but show people a Techie, and 90% will probably be able to identify it, where as only a handful of people will name the others.

Over rated, over hyped and over priced by a huge amount is why I hate them. I use a Thorens TD150 personally... one of the decks, along with the AR 77 and Ariston, that Linn basically copied! Ariston even took them to court!
I had one years ago. It had the red neon push button for power. It was no better than a well set up Thorens TD150 or 160 but kept going out of adjustment with regularity.... I had a Walker CJ55 after that! A deck you never hear about these days.
A Roksan Xerxes will piss on a Sondek!! Until the top sags anyway!

Wake up...Another 20 years and Audiophile HiFi'ers that even recognise let alone give a Sh#t about an SL-1200 will be DEAD.

Not like that iconic streamer from 2017 is it ? Aye , in 20 years time that'll be the name on every audiophiles lips. Yep ... the good old Kaksong SX21Ds3365/xxxsrT series 32688.

It's a musical and enjoyable deck that seems to get a backlash because it was a bit overhyped in its heyday. The Xerxes bettered it in every single way for me, but that doesn't stop me liking it and appreciating the part it played in mine and many others lives. I still see it as iconic and am very fond of it.

This may be beside the point for devotees, but you can usually get a better sound for less money. If you like what the LP12 does though, that may not mater to you.

I’ve had and built a few the can be excellent and also average the best one I had was an early pre Cirkus, bonded subchasis job with the FR12 arm that Fidelity Research made especially for the LP12, great record Player.

No it ain't. The Valhalla one was great fun. I paid £300 for mine and loved it. Before they tried to make it hi fi. BoP till you drop.. Jazz on the early LP12 was toe tap olicious. I don't give a F#ck about it not being hi fidelity. It was musical. Far more involving than some of the sterile shite like Rega and Project that's for sure. And yes... I've had them aswell. I can't defend the later variations with the stupid big money downgrades but the early Sondeks made music big time. 😝

Great when it decides to cooperate, but most of the time a bottomless money pit.

Why a moneypit ? Three springs and gromets ? No one made anyone spend money on them ffs. Yeah they were a bastard for the bounce shifting but that just required a bit of patience not money. I was tempted by so called bigger and better things and spent 15 years not enjoying any of them more than the cardboard box Linn. As for the Xerxes.... absolutely stunningly bloody average ! Lasted 6 months. You've never had a Sondek of your own have you really thought ? No you haven't. .. I can tell you haven't.

Nothing wrong with mine, works just fine and has done since I bought it in 1987. I'll take a stab and bet I've spent less on this than a lot of folk on here with the incessant box swapping looking for the next best thing (turntable). Plus I don't have to trouble myself with the silly "Look at me I'm a hifi expert because I hate the LP12" ffs....

The 1979 one I dealt with a few weeks ago with Mission 774 - totally original with grey (oxidised too) springs sounded great and only needed a couple of nuts tightening plus a new P clip as necessary when an old one is removed. I replaced the belt as it was a bit shiny (a sign of wear), springs and grommets as a matter of course and as instructed but not sure really if they were needed and to keep costs moderate, everything else was left as is. Sounded absolutely fine to me! Had this thing had an Ittok on it, then I guess the sound wouldn't have been so good by now as this arm really ruined the bass on the original spec LP12, needing the structural upgrades to make it work best in my experience. Maybe in a fair A-B with same cartridge fitted, a Rega Planar 6 would have been its equal, I don't know - shows how far vinyl's come since digital blew it away in the early 80's.....
I heard a Planar 10/Apheta 3 last night for a few hours. It's a very enjoyable listen indeed and definitely for the 'digital age' in terms of absolute pitch stability (no organic piano notes) and lack of bass 'overhang.' The 'sound' otherwise was harder to pin down as it changed with every record played and we played all sorts - surely a good sign?

Surely all you want from a turntable is a sound that you enjoy? If it does not get your foot tapping then it is no good, no matter how expensive it was.
This is probably why I don't class myself as an audiophile. I just want to be able to enjoy the music.
