When i left school the very first job i got was in a small Record store in Town. That being the beginning of the 80's, that is where i got my taste for Depeche Mode from.. One afternoon i went down the News Agent to pick up my dads monthly International Musician Magazine & New Musical Express for me. I was reading it at the dinner table & my dad suddenly said why you buy that? I said cos its the best thing if you want to know about whats happening music wise. He said he used to buy it years ago & that it had free tapes & floppy discs every now & then..
The conversation when on & he went to pull out his record cases.. Boring me to death with his Rock 'n'Roll stuff [That i hate with a passion]. I spotted a real far out single sleeve, i asked what it was, he said o that is just some rubbish i got in one of those magazines, i don't honestly know why i keep it.. Anyway that was that till day after i decided to take the liberty of going thru that singles box looking for that single, the artwork was really cool beyond belief i thought. Turned out to be a Floppy Disc sampler for Emerson, Lake & Palmer 'Brain Salad Surgery' album.. I had never heard of this band because i had only been in the record shop less than 6 months & new pretty much nothing about music other than the stuff in the charts at the time, it was only a tiny shop that did not have a variation of different music other than the present releases.
Anyway off upstairs i went into my pit, put the Flexi on my Sentra stereo & was utterly blown away, never heard anything so crazy in my entire life, but was utterly amazing i thought. Ok sneaked it back into the case, Saturday came & off up to Sheffield i went to the Big Virgin mega store just up from the Hole in the road, that was a real massive shop with two or it may have been three floors. Totally daunted by the majority of stuff i had never heard off i came to the ELP section, there it was the 'Brain Salad Surgery' LP.
Totally amazed by this i had to show it my dad who could not believe me. He hated this kind of music so i did not really expect any interest in it from him but i do have him to thank for this. Since then i wanted more of it, reading in reference books & band family tree it soon came apparent that it was easy to work out this form of music was so extensive which has really been a life long mission & obsession.Pretty much nothing i dont know about it these days..
That is how i got into Prog & why ELP are my fav band of all time..
