OK, I’ll be the one to look like a thicko and admit to googling it!
I liked this at least.

I’m staggered at the talent of musical people. It’s like some form of magic to me. How on earth would you know where and how to manipulate that and make a beautiful, let alone string them together,

I’m hopeless with Rock music. I have as close to zero knowledge as it’s possible to get. Just wondering who your avatar is. The only suspect I could think,of is Rock Parfitt from Status Quo but that didn’t seem likely.

No I hate Theramins but I do like a bit of mellotron.
Also not keen on the 1980s style drums with all the gateing on them. Funny thing is, although I've no time for Collins's music (except for 'Easy Lover'), 'In The Air Tonight' is one of the few songs where that drum sound actually works well.

You don't need knowledge to enjoy music though
I made my own rock "album" once - wrote, played, sung and mixed it all myself. I still have it - it is great to listen back and think "did I really do all that??" It tought me a lot - the main thing being that I haven't got what "they" have got. Recording and mixing well is an art.
And singing! I found you really need to give it all you have - otherwise it just sounds terrible on playback - as if you can't be bothered. Singing convincingly is a big deal.
The "avatar" is a guitarist called Alex Lifeson (his real surname is unpronounceable). He is about 65 now I would think. In the photo he is probably in his early 20s at the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands in 1979. That was the punk era so he was decidedly as unfashionable as Rob Parfitt at the time.

Same here. It is a bit more like John Bonham somehow.

Now I feel better for not recognising him I think I’ve heard the name before though
