Ken Boothe – Everything I Own. This is one of the first records that I can remember singing and dancing around the front room to, occasionally bumping into one of the sharp corners of our radiogram. In the same vein, I could also have had Downtown by Petula Clark or Midnight In Moscow by Kenny Ball & His Jazz Men.
David Cassidy – The Puppy Song. The second single that I ever bought. The first was Space Oddity by David Bowie but this one reflects more accurately my level of cool! I never missed an episode of The Partridge Family, joined the DC fan club and still have around 10 of his LPs. The first meal I ever cooked was a recipe from the 1975 (I think) annual – some type of soul food involving chicken thighs.
Stiff Little Fingers – Alternative Ulster. Sat watching a play about The Troubles and this came on. Fucking wow! Fucking yes! That is fucking it! One of my mates had a punk big brother (15). Within a week I was in with the big lads and going to gigs. Seen SLF around a hundred times.
Crass – Big Hands. At the same time I discovered that these lived just up the road. They used to go in the local shop (for local people) where my mum worked, and a few mates and I got friendly with them and occasionally hung out around Dial House. The 'classic Crass manifesto is probably 'Big A Little A' – “be exactly who you want to be, do what you want to do” - but I liked the way that 'Big Hands' becomes 'Beer Cans' when you sing it over and over very fast. It does...doesn't it?
Wire – I Should Have Known Better. These turned me on to the idea of art for arts sake, and pure intellectual purpose, that reached it's logical conclusion with Throbbing Gristle...via Gang Of Four, The Mekons, DAF, Devo, The Monochrome Set...
The Pogues & The Dubliners – The Irish Rover. My dad was Irish and I grew up in the 70s with regular visits from Aunts & Uncles, and cousins. After 'the men' got back from the pub, the Dubliners records would come out and 'the women' would open a few bottles of Blue Nun. My cousins and I would complain and go upstairs...with a couple of bottles of Guinness that had been slipped to us by our favourite Uncle, Brian. Fast forward to 1988 and I was going with the same cousins to see The Pogues live at The Town & Country Club.
Dr. Feelgood – All Through The City. We'd been going on day trips to Southend and Canvey Island for as long as I could remember and we moved to Prittlewell in 1984. Coming back to the estuary after gigs in London we would often catch the 2am 'milk train' from Liverpool Street. Landing back in Sarfend, if we still had the energy, or if we'd copped off and wanted to go for a snog, we'd have a walk along the front. This song always reminds me of that - “I've been searching all through the city, see you in the morning down by the Jetty”
KLF – What Time Is Love? We were on our way to see Lush at the Town & Country Club. One mate's very cool mum had made us some 'special' flapjacks and we devoured the lot within about half an hour. Pretty stoned and half pissed, sat in The Falcon', pointing at each other and singing “ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh...what time is Lush?” then rolling around, crying laughing, repeated at least a hundred times. We thought this minor wordplay was the funniest thing ever..and it probably still is. We missed the start of the gig because we got the munchies and went in the noodle bar down the road.
Half Man Half Biscuit – 99% Of Gargoyles Look Like Bob Todd. Nigel Blackwell must turn down the Poet Laureate job every year. There can be no other explanation. Genius. Fact.
If you ever wondered how
You get triangles from a cow
You need butter, milk and cheese
And an equilateral chainsaw

That’s a quality post, loads of context. I was going to post the first 8 that sprang to mind but maybe I need to think a bit more. Well at least I can start with one.
Yello: Toy. I’ve loved this pair since I first heard Flag in the 80s. They only seem to get better which always astounds me. Toy is just so sumptuous it’s like a fine piece of architecture. Every time I hear it, I get the same level of pleasure.

What are the ruels, do they have to have been released as singles?
If not my pick would be
Led Zep - Dazed and Confused
Steely Dan - Any Major Dude
Steely Dan - Here At The Western World.
Dire Straits - Lions
Cream - Crossroads (Live)
Jimi Hendrix - Red House
Happy Mondays - Step On
Context - songs I loved back when I was young, broke but having it large and they still make me feel that way.

The Beatles: Strawberry Fields Forever.
I was completely blown away when I first heard this song on my parents' radio, and it still sends shivers down my spine. I know there are people out there who don't rate The Beatles, but there's also people who don't like Shakespeare, and I bet there's even a few who aren't happy with the King James Bible.
The Kinks: Waterloo Sunset
The best song ever recorded by anyone, ever.
The Band: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
From their self-titled second album, on the first half-dozen or I so I owned. Amazing song that sounds more like a trad:arr tune than something written by couple of Canadians.
Bob Dylan: Visions of Johanna
I could have chose eight Dylan songs, but this just clinches it, plus it's a long song with lots of words.
Lovin' Spoonful: Six O'Clock
A great song about young love
Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Another one that sends shivers down the spine, plus there's the 'Withnail and I' link.
Half Man Half Biscuit: All I Want For Christmas (Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit)
All about my childhood. Sod it, let's have the lyrics in full:
'There was one in the gang, Who had Scalextric, And because of that, He thought he was better than you. Everyday after school, You'd go around there to play it, Hoping to compete for some kind of championship, And it always took about 15 billion hours to set the track up. And even when you did, the thing never seemed to work.
It was a dodgy transformer, again and again. A dodgy transformer, again and again. It was a dodgy transformer, again and again. A dodgy transformer, cost 3 pounds 10.
So he sent his doting mother Up the stairs with the stepladder, To get the Subbuteo, Out of the loft. He had all the accessories, Required for that big-match atmosphere. The crowd and the dugout, And the floodlights, too. And you'd always get palmed off With a headless centre-forward, And a goal-keeper with no arms, And a face like his
And he'd managed to get hold of A Dukla-Prague Away Kit, Coz his uncle owned a sport shop And he'd kept it to one side. And after only five minutes You'd be down to ten men, Because he'd sent off your right back for taking the base from under his left winger.
Come to half-time, you were losing, four-nil. Each and every goal, a hotly disputed penatly. So you smash up the floodlights And the game was abandoned, And the dog would bark And you'd be banned from his house. And your travelling army Of synthetic supporters Would be taken away from you And thrown in the bin.
And now he's working In a job with a future. He hands me my Giro Every two weeks. And me, I'm on the lookout For a proper transformer. Uh?!
Steely Dan: Bodhisattva
It could have been any track from 'Countdown to Ecstasy', but this is my personal fave. I dug it out yesterday. Man, that sleeve is knackered, but the album sounds fine.

What's a bible got to do with anything? Well, I'd put The Beatles' output on a level with Shakespeare and the Bible*. Plus, of course, on Desert Island Discs you're allowed to take one book, the Bible and Shakespeare being there already. * Meaning the Bible as a work of literature rather than as a religious book.

I’d go to a desert island just to avoid The beatles music lol. Shakespeare would make great kindling so I’d welcome as much of that shite as I could get my hands on. The. Bible I’d actually like to read one day. Spoiled a bit by knowing the ending though.

the days when you were sacked but got some complimentary playing cards are long gone.
re HMHB 'All I want for Christmas...' I've always been impressed by the accuracy and attention to detail in that song. Was there a period from maybe 1965 to about 1980 where every British youth lived essentially the exact same life?

Collect your cards on the way out. Just send me to a desert island! No Beatles no Shakespeare, no Opera (my biggest hate) and no opportunity to keep buying hifi that I never use. I might actually be happy as a pig in mud

I think so. I actually had a friend whose uncle owned a sports shop! What's more, Nigel Blackwell's mother worked in the same factory as my father (Champion spark plugs).

And I was taught at school by HMHB's manager.
It might be a small world now but back then it was microscopic.

It’s hard to describe why any of these are special to me and there are many more I could’ve picked, but here are the 8 I’d pick today.
Don’t give up - Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush Ophelia- Courage Of Lassie Electrified - Yello Road To Hell - Chris Rea A place in The World- Mary Chapin Carpenter Smooth - Santana The Wings That Fly Us Home - John Denver Badlands - Bruce Springsteen

Chris Rea eh?
Used to know his niece, she was married to a friend for a while.
I think the only thing he ever did I really liked was 'Fool If You Think It's Over'. That's a great song but the Elkie Brook's version is the definitive one for me.

He pissed me of a bit when his wife spoiled Alan Partridge’s imaginary garden party Apologies to any non-Partridge readers who won’t age a clue what I’m on about but it had to be said.

'Shall I bring my guitar along, Alan?' 'I'd rather you didn't, it's not that sort of party.' Spot on For the uninitiated. Here are some more “lyrics” I just want to be able to say.... “I'm Alan Partridge. Join me tonight when my guests will be, I don't know, Chris Rea”. Actually, he lives in the area. I could have had him over. “Alright Chris!” “Hello Alan I didn't know you'd moved in” “Yeah, just moved in, last week. I'm having a barbecue, fancy coming over?” “I'd love to! Do you mind if I bring my guitar?” “I'd rather you didn't, it's not that kind of area. Do you like Mini Kiev's?” “I love them! But my wife's vegetarian” “Doesn't matter. She can have fish” “No she won't eat that either” “Oh forget it!. You people”. Let’s go Lynn. These people are starting to annoy me.
