I'm a drummer. And yeah i like to hang around with musicians But what is being a good drummer all about ? When you are young an inexperienced all you want to do is over play, put loads of fills in or repeat something cool you just learned too many times. Experience brings composure, better time keeping and playing for the song not yourself. Some of my favourite music is funk. They have infectious beats that sound simple but are deceptively complex in a way that is hard to put into words. Ask people their fave drummer and a lot will mention some flashy show off like Keith Moon for example or Cozy Powell etc etc. Hardly anyone says Ringo or Charlie Watts. In my opinion they are all good at what they do but it has to be in the right band. Put moonie in the stones and it would all have turned to shite and they would never have been famous. So the right music and the right mix of talents and personalities and bingo. I like The Who but would never say moonie is my fave. Some very cool funk or jazz drummer would probably be who i would choose. In the rock arena it would have to be John Henry Bonham every time. Could go nuts when called for but had such a feel and a light touch when needed. Rock on.

You're right, the drummer has to be able to do what works with the material, a really good drummer can do that rather than just import his own style.
Anyway, I know a bloke who can do that and he gets a lot of session and tour work out of it, and that's what he reckons. You can ask him to play in anyone's style and he can just do it. I suppose that is the difference though, Watts, Moon, Ringo, Bonham, they were all one-offs, not session men.

Aye a good drummer should be able to turn his sticks to anything.
Ginger Baker. Terry Bozio. Neil Peart.
They could play a bit.

Ginger Baker - excellent drummer. I love Cream, in fact I had the best of in my car playing for over a year.
Time keeping is essential but it is hard to go out of time when you are playing to a metronome. Seeing a drummer live is the best judge of that (unless they are playing to a click live as well).
That said, I don't mind music which speeds up and slows down at certain points as long as the whole band are doing it and it adds something to the track.

Drum fills could go on forever on that kit. Not sure I would know what to hit first though

Keith Moon's energy just blew me away when I first heard the Who.
The Slipknot drummer (name escapes me) is one of my favourites.
I realise they aren't the most technical but I'm a simpleton who's easily pleased when it comes to drummers.

Don Henley out of the Eagles is pretty good, and he can sing at the same time as playing.

I love Ginger Baker's drum solo on Cream's Wheels of Fire live album and I do play it often. One of the very few drum solos that has expression and well constructed phrases to entertain.
Neil Peart is to me a speed man in the extreme, but speed isn't everything and there isn't any rhythmn and phrasing to follow along with his playing.
The dutch group Focus did a track called Anonymus II on their Focus 3 album where they jam this track really well for 24 minutes or so and it sounds almost improvised, but it isn't. Great bass guitar solo in there too, but the drummer during his solo stint has some stamina that I couldn't keep up with for sure.

My grand daughters like Bernard Matthews turkey drummers. John Bonham Seattle 1977. This Moby dick version is my favourite. Not too bothered about the timpani part but the first 16 mins is top draw. Lots of paradiddle diddles and bass drum technique to die for. Dave Grohl - awesome drumming on Queens of the stoneage songs for the deaf.

I like Phil Collin's drumming but they should never have allowed him near a microphone. He can sing, yes, in that he can hit the notes, but his voice is awful.

In general drummers should not be allowed near a microphone. I do a bit of backing vocal in one of the bands I am in. It can be quite distracting until you have the drum parts locked away in your brain and they come out naturally (like in your sleep). Then you can concentrate on the vocals.
Respect to Don Henley, awesome at both disciplines.

Watched the final part of The Art of Drumming (Sky Arts) last night, have to say what an excellent and informative programme it was.

We need more Mo Tucker and less Ginger Baker. No-one likes drum solos that go beyond, say, 30 seconds.

The Slipknot drummer (name escapes me) is one of my favourites. It used to be Joey Jordison. My son likes trying to play their stuff but he's playing this at an upcoming drum clinic For anyone in the area, the clinic is in Preston with Daisy Palmer (tickets via Jopson music academy)
