Ah! But is it!?! Who knows what one more minute might have brought?... Sorry. Couldn't resist it. Could have saved yourself the humping around. The XTZ was already in place so it was only a question of hooking it up. Will be next weekend now before I can take the Krell to be mended so I've got all week to keep soak-testing the DCB1 just in case.

Having a major clear-up and reorg, managed to get a fair pile of spare gear together and shelved up. (Crappy pic off of the laptop camera, but you get the general idea)

I know, I don't know why the laptop camera is so poor, the laptop itself was quite expensive back in the day. I bought it used (for cash ofc).

I know, I don't know why the laptop camera is so poor, the laptop itself was quite expensive back in the day. I bought it used (for cash ofc). Computer cams, webcams and phone cams tend to be pretty crappy. Good proper used digital cameras are very cheap now, so why not get one? Half the problem with indoor shots is lack of decent light, at least cameras come with proper flashes and good lenses.

I've got a digital camera somewhere, a Fujitsu, need to find it. My phone camera is not bad but the phone won't talk to the laptop.

Might be the same issue with mine. I think it only starts to play up after a while when it has warmed through though so maybe a component or a solder joint has gone bad.

What gets me is my 790 sounds better than my X505ES. Which shouldn't be. The 505 has wooden end cheeks FFS! How can it be worse? It was ten times the price when new.

My 36 year old Sony 'CDP502es' sound better than any Sony ive ever owned including the very expensive ones like my old 'CDP-2700' which was a pro version of the 'X55es'. The only down side fr some with the '502' is it does not have a digital output, But i have no desire to use one. You want one you would have opted for the 'CDP552esd'

I've got a minty Marantz CD54, you'd like that. I got that to see if it was true that early CD players sound harsh and cack. They don't ofc.

Okay here's a turn up for the books. On the TV system the XTZ sounds surprisingly good as an integrated so I thought I'd try the XTZ in the main system as an integrated instead of using it as a power amp with the DCB1 as a pre. And it actually sounds quite a bit better as an integrated. Better clarity and resolution on cymbals and other percussion and better bass, deeper and tighter. Actually not far off the killer combo of DCB1-Krell.
Must be some sort of pre-power compatibility issue I guess. Can't see any other reason.
