Do it Jerry when working well they are lovely amps . Not high end the very best but a very musical and enjoyable listen that can extend in to years . Also be cause the wooden sleeve is removable they can look very smart for very little work .b

Also be cause the wooden sleeve is removable they can look very smart for very little work .b Yes, I almost feel a moral obligation to try and get it fixed! Although the sound quality I heard between the awful startup noise and when the sound drifted to the L channel was smoothed over, vague and over warm rather than transparent and tautly defined. Nowhere near the quality of its successors, the Alpha mk1 and mk2 that I already have and enjoy. But how much of that is due to its issues I have no idea!

A de-poo-ed Bugsy Cat 🐈 And the glow of el84 valves in the background

My little Yarland FV-34Ciii el84 amp now kitted out with new valves. It came with the original stock Chinese valves. 4x JJ el84 and 2x GE 5670. I swapped in the GE 5670 first. Wow. 👌 I'd been fine with the sq before, but the overall improvement surprised me. Just more palpable and naturally vivid and in the room there. After a couple of days I swapped in the JJ el84. Worthwhile improvement, but not the Wow moment as per the 5670.

Currently my main 'Headphone Station'. It all starts off-camera with my Samsung A54 phone streaming from PrestoMusic. Thence by Bluetooth to the AudioEngine B1 receiver on the right of the photo, which is powered by the 5V linear PSU that it's sitting on. Ixos 105 digital cable to the Topping E30 DAC on the upper left. Then to the Topping L30ii headphone amp that the E30 is sitting on. Monolith M1570 headphones currently in residence.

Today's arrivals Thule Spirit IA60 integrated amp and CD150B cdp. Aye, a change is as good as a rest. Unlike most here, I'm not on the Eternal Upgrade Escalator. I'm happy if I enjoy a different rather than a better presentation when I swap components, whatever 'better' might mean to you. The critical word for me is enjoy. Thule. Danish, designed and manufactured... and defunct. But it seems sturdily made, and has a pleasing Scandinavian simplicity. If you like that sort of thing. Sorry Martin, no meters or even much in the way of controls! OK, it's boring, but it's Scandinavian Boring so it therefore must be cool. 😎 If you lose the remote handset you're in trouble, especially with the cdp. A lot of useful functions can only be accessed from the remote. The amp is class AB, with allegedly zero feedback. It does have a distinctive sound. The emphasis seems to be on clarity, rich but not heavy tonality, and imaging focus and openness, rather than power and heft. Enjoyable? Yup.

Looks nice, but a bit of dusting wouldn't go amiss

Thule if you think it's over...
They look good, I like the old school red displays. From the mid 90s I think?

considering how much time they spend grubbing around in alleys and bushes they always manage to keep their fur amazingly Daz-white. I mean it's a miracle of nature.

I had a Thule integrated a few years ago and it was a very sweet sounding device. Yes, good description. Sweet sounding is certainly part of its undoubted magic. Quite smitten by it. It put the latest fanboyfettish chip amp, Fosi V3, in its place in no uncertain terms.

The Thule amp is still here. Not taken it out of the system since I first tried it over 2 months ago. It hits the spot for me atm. Now joined by a Denafrips DAC 8 Pro which arrived today. Thanks Ian ijrussell. Word is usually that Denafrips DACs need some warming up and are best left permanently on. Just playing some unfamiliar material for a while to let it settle in a bit.

Hmm, well, OK. Looks like the Denafrips will be staying.
Definitely a differing tonality to the Topping E30ii. The Dena is richer/fuller in the mids, weightier in the bass, high frequencies rolled off a fair bit in comparison.
I use a 20 band digital eq, largely dialled in with pink noise. This needed adjusting for the Denafrips which sounded smoothed over, bland and a bit dull on the eq used for the Topping.
... A dB or 2 above 2khz or so tweaked up compared to the Topping, bass down 1.5db, and ker-lick, the dang thing comes alive in a vibrant way that eluded the Topping.
Much more listening to do on a wide range of music. But this will likely keep me entertained for a while, I think.

Jerry just check the set up of the Denfrips which is confirmed by the blue led over the relevant inputs used . On the far right is a button which changes the filter and if this is on then that may well be the cause of the rolled off sound .

Thanks Andrew, I'll have a play with that. But with the dialled in eq it's OK anyway.

It was really close to my Soekris 2541 at the time, but the HF extension was missing and it sounded a little closed-in, in comparison. I wonder if that may have changed things.

Oli I doubt it it only has one alternative filter and I thought it closed the music and made sure it was always off . My current dCS has six but only be that for me sounds right and that is number six . I went through each one for three days each before I styled on this choice and then just left it on that one choice .
